Alan Shearer says something worrying is going to start happening in football after Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool

Liverpool are now the team to beat across all competitions after the impressive summer transfer window they’ve just been through.

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes have spent over £400million on attempting to improve their first-team squad this summer, with players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak choosing to make the switch to Anfield.

The aforementioned duo are the Reds’ most expensive purchases of the window, with both breaking the British record fee, if all add-ons are met, of course.

However, it’s not only the two attackers who have been brought in. Slot has also massively upgraded his defensive line with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez being brought in to bolster their ranks.

Indeed, it’s going to take some time for everyone to gel with one another, but the fact that they’ve already won their first three Premier League games shows how strong their team already is.

And, even though the arrival of Isak wasn’t done in the best of ways for Newcastle, there’s no hiding from the fact that he’ll be an impressive addition.

Alan Shearer believes more players will cause a stir to try and get the transfers they desire

One thing the 2025-26 summer transfer window has shown fans is that if players kick up enough of a fuss, they’re likely to get their move.

Isak is the main culprit for this, but his replacement, Yoanne Wissa, was just as bad.

Indeed, both Newcastle and Brentford ended up getting decent fees for their wantaway stars, but in reality, they’d have probably preferred to keep them around for another season or two.

And, while discussing the transfers of Isak and Wissa on the Stick to Football Podcast, Alan Shearer gave his opinion on what could end up happening to football now that both these players have got their moves.

“Unfortunately, I think because of what’s happened with Isak and what’s happened with Wissa, then you will see more [players refusing to play],” Shearer said.

“I don’t like it, I don’t think any fan likes it, and I can’t say because of the Isak situation. I also have to mention the Wissa situation and him going to Newcastle, I don’t like what the players have done.

“It’s not a good look for football, but unfortunately, I think because of those two, getting their moves, particularly the Isak one, because that’s been more high profile than anything I can ever remember, then players will look at that and think if he or they did it, then I can do it.”

Liverpool need to be at the top of their game after the international break

Although Isak has only just arrived at Anfield, he’s already gone away as he’s set to represent his national team.

Now that the transfer window is closed, it’ll give Slot some time to have a look over the Reds’ first three Premier League games of the season and have a think about where they can improve.

Indeed, it’s still early days, and, even though Liverpool may have nine points to their name, there were still some shaky moments during their games against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal.

And, now that Isak is a part of the equation, Slot also has to choose who to start between his two strikers.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but unless Liverpool manage to hit the ground running as soon as their players are back from international duty, things could end up going sideways rather quickly.
