Rio Ferdinand shares laughable verdict on ‘lucky’ Dominik Szoboszlai moment for Liverpool against Arsenal

Liverpool managed to extend their perfect run in the Premier League after they beat Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday evening.

The Reds hosted the Gunners at Anfield and although Arne Slot’s men weren’t the best team for the full 90 minutes, they were the only ones who scored, which, at the end of the day, is all that matters.

Liverpool now have nine points to their name and currently sit on top of the Premier League table with Chelsea sitting in second, on seven points.

Although their first three top-flight games have been far from ideal performance-wise, they’ve managed to come away with the win in each one and prove that they’re here to fight for the title.

Rio Ferdinand believes Dominik Szoboszlai got “lucky” during Liverpool’s game v Arsenal

Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick was the difference-maker in the game on Sunday, with his 32-yard strike one of the best goals of the weekend.

The midfielder was once again played out of his normal position, with Slot choosing to use him at right-back over the likes of Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley.

However, it wasn’t only his goal that caused a bit of a stir in the game.

In the 97th minute of the game, Arsenal had a corner, and as the ball was whipped in, it came down and landed on the top of the Hungary international’s arm.

The midfielder’s arm wasn’t in an unnatural position with VAR even waving the moment on; however, Rio Ferdinand believes that if a Manchester United player had done that, Arsenal would have been given a penalty.

“Szoboszlai handball, that looks like a handball to me,” he said while live on his YouTube channel.

“That’s handball, if that’s Old Trafford that handball, lucky man, Szoboszlai got lucky.”

Dominik Szoboszlai is one of Liverpool’s best players at the moment

Even though Szoboszlai has been played out of his normal position for Liverpool’s last two games, he’s still been one of their best players.

His defensive contributions alongside his keen eye for a pass are all things that make him the ideal right-back for Slot’s first-team squad.

Last season, the Reds had Trent Alexander-Arnold to create chances from the back for them, but with him now gone and Jeremie Frimpong ruled out due to injury, the only creativity is coming from their midfield.

However, with Szoboszlai at the back, while he may not be the fastest, he has all the key attributes needed to become an incredibly important asset for Liverpool.

That is, even though Florian Wirtz now occupies the position, the former RB Leipzig man held down all last season.
