Liverpool fans enjoyed a first Premier League win over Arsenal for three seasons on Sunday as they continued their excellent start.
The Reds have not been especially pretty during their opening three games, but have emerged victorious in each of them.
Sunday’s win has the potential to be the most important one yet, with an early marker laid down in the Premier League title race.
There were many other pleasing aspects to Liverpool‘s triumph as well, with one being the presence in the Arsenal team of former transfer target Martin Zubimendi.
Zubimendi turned Liverpool down in the summer of 2024, having made a last-minute change of heart to stay at Real Sociedad. 12 months later, he joined Arsenal.
On Sunday, the Spaniard made his first ever appearance at Anfield, the place he so nearly called home. And having been on the receiving end of a difficult afternoon, Liverpool fans enjoyed every bit of Zubimendi’s visit.

Liverpool fans unimpressed with Martin Zubimendi
There is little question that Zubimendi is a top player and he would have fitted well into the Liverpool squad.
However, he did not have his best game on Sunday, even giving away the free-kick which Dominik Szoboszlai scored from.
“Zubimendi giving away the free kick that decided the match, poetic,” said one fan, with another adding: “Zubimendi in the background looking at ball going in the net is even sweeter.”
“To beat Arsenal with a set piece goal from a free kick conceded by Zubimendi.. the plot can’t be any better written,” quipped someone else.
“Thank you Zubimendi for helping Liverpool FC win this game,” was another’s verdict, while some simply voiced their opinions on a poor overall display from the 26-year-old.
“Gravenberch dominated that midfield today, Zubimendi looked terrible,” one fan said. “Martin Zubimendi, thank you for rejecting us. You are horrific,” said another.
“Zubimendi by the way. Footballer equivalent of a pot of grey Dulux,” was someone else’s verdict, while one more summed it up by saying: “I’m so glad Zubimendi went to Arsenal.”
Liverpool win the midfield battle
Heading into this game, it was always key that Liverpool would be able to get the better of the Arsenal midfield.
The Reds were given a helping hand in that respect by the ability to start Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister together for the first time this season.
However, it was clear that Arne Slot had potentially rushed Mac Allister back slightly earlier than he would have hoped, with the Argentine not appearing to be fully match fit.
Happily, Gravenberch was excellent alongside him, and it was largely thanks to the Dutchman that Liverpool were able to win the midfield battle.
A special mention to Curtis Jones as well, who came on to win the free-kick from Zubimendi which ultimately sent him and his teammates back to London with nothing.
