Liverpool have been rather busy in the summer transfer window this time around, with Arne Slot and Richard Hughes spending over £250million trying to improve their team.

And, while on paper their first-team squad looks a lot stronger than last season’s, due to how many changes have been made, their new arrivals are going to need time to gel.

Players such as Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez are yet to hit the ground running, as even though they’ve played at a top level for some time now, playing for Liverpool is a whole different level.

Indeed, they have managed to win their first two Premier League games, which means something must be going their way, but on the face of things, it’s clear to see that the Reds were rather lucky in both outings.

Jeff Stelling says signing Marc Guehi is more important than Alexander Isak for Liverpool

Since the summer transfer window opened, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international has been the Reds’ dream target for as long as many can remember, and even though a move hasn’t come to light just yet, it feels like a matter of time before it does.

Because, even though the Magpies sent some of their ownership to talk to Isak, he still stuck by his stance of wanting to leave, with Anfield the only destination on his mind.

However, while live on talkSPORT, Jeff Stelling shared that there’s another player who’d be a more important addition for Slot this summer, other than Isak.

“His [Arne Slot’s] bigger concern [than signing Isak]  is what he does with his defence,” he said.

“And for me, whatever the asking price is for Marc Guehi, then Liverpool need to go out and buy him today.”

McCoist then replied with: “I agree with Jeff, although I can’t see that happening, I mean, for the other end of the deal.

“If Crystal Palace sell Guehi, oh dear me.”

Liverpool desperately need defensive reinforcement this season

Players such as Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni have all been brought in to try and bolster Liverpool’s defensive ranks.

However, since Leoni is too young to be a regular starter, Frimpong is out injured, and Kerkez is a bit of a livewire, Liverpool are no better off than they were last season.

In fact, Ibrahima Konate’s form has even fallen off a cliff, with the Frenchman being one of Liverpool’s worst players this season.

To combat this, one signing that the Reds must try and make is the addition of Guehi.

The Englishman has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt and, since he only has a year left on his current deal, he could be signed for pennies.

Indeed, Liverpool do already have Virgil van Dijk, Konate and Joe Gomez to choose from, but with the way things have started out this season, another experienced centre-back should be on their agenda.

Only time will tell what the future has in store, but with everything that has gone on since the 2025-26 season kicked off, signing Guehi feels like it’s more important than signing Isak at the moment.
