Liverpool told they are ‘in the driving seat’ to make another big defensive signing this summer

Liverpool are building an incredible team ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Indeed, their campaign may have kicked off with a defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday, but throughout the tie, there were glimpses of top-quality football.

Arne Slot has already overhauled his team, and with over two weeks still left in the transfer window, there’s plenty more time for even more players to be brought in.

Giovanni Leoni looks to be the next player announced by the Reds, but there are a couple of other names that have also been floating around over the last couple of days.

Steve Sidwell believes Liverpool are in the ‘driver’s seat’ for the transfer of Marc Guehi

One of the main players to have been linked with an Anfield switch this summer is Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The Englishman has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and judging by the performance he put in against the Reds during the Eagles’ Community Shield win, it’s clear that Guehi is one of England’s best centre-backs.

And, while speaking live on Sky Sports, pundit Steve Sidwell shared his thoughts on the Reds’ potential pursuit of the centre-back.

“I think Liverpool, is he going to play week-in, week-out, he’s shown enough that he can play at the highest level, he’s been at Chelsea before, he knows what it’s about about winning trophies,” Sidwell said.

“I think there’s a lot of moving parts. The biggest thing is going to be in Palace’s court; they don’t want to lose him for free next season, they’re going to want to cash in, they have to cash in.

“They need to try and get as much money as possible, and that’s going to be who’s stumping up the most. It looks like it’s going to be Liverpool that’s going to be in the driving seat at the moment.

“They haven’t really replaced Quansah, so they’re going to need a bit of strength in depth. It’s going to be a huge season for Crystal Palace.”

Liverpool must do everything to try and sign Marc Guehi this summer

As mentioned, even though Leoni is close to sealing his Anfield switch, there’s still room within Liverpool’s ranks to welcome a new centre-back to the mix.

Much like Guehi, Ibrahima Konate has also entered the final year of his deal with the club, and although the Reds want to extend his stay, there’s no harm in having three top-quality centre-backs to choose from.

Virgil van Dijk’s deal is only set to last two years, and upon the expiry of his contract, it’s unclear whether he’ll still be good enough to lead the Reds’ back four.

This is why Guehi would be a perfect addition, as, although he may have to be rotated more than he’d like to be for a season or two, he’d have a clear path into the Reds’ first-team squad in a couple of years.

Of course, these are all just rumours and ideas at the moment, but if Liverpool do need to source a replacement for Konate or Van Dijk over the next couple of seasons, it’s unlikely that they’d do better than Guehi.
