David Ornstein shares big update on Marc Guehi as ‘afraid’ verdict emerges amid Liverpool interest

Liverpool have spent big this summer with Arne Slot showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

The Reds are on the cusp of welcoming Hugo Ekitike as their seventh signing this summer with the Dutchman clearly looking to rebuild his first-team squad.

If Ekitike’s move ends up getting confirmed, that will take the Reds’ spending close to £300million, which, after the dominance they showed in the Premier League this season, is a crazy thing to say.

Indeed, all the players that have been brought in will help improve the Anfield outfit’s ranks, but there are still a couple of areas which need reinforcement, including their centre-backs.

Liverpool are still on the hunt for a new centre-back this summer with Marc Guehi being the main player linked with a move.

Indeed, others such as Giovanni Leoni have also entered the frame, but with Guehi’s Premier League experience and the fact he only has a year left on his deal, he’s the more likely candidate to join.

And, while speaking to Sky Sports, transfer guru David Ornstein has shared an update on where the future of Crystal Palace’s captain could lie.

“I think Palace would be willing to cash in rather than face losing him for free next summer, but he’s got the power in his hands,” Ornstein said.

“He’s got the power in his hands, he’s very happy at Crystal Palace by the sounds of it, and I don’t think he’d be afraid to go to the end of his deal.

“It doesn’t seem like a new contract is on the agenda, and I think Marc Guehi, with total respect to Crystal Palace, is going to be playing at the very top in Champions League football, whether it’s sooner or later.”

As mentioned, Liverpool are still on the lookout for ways to improve their ranks despite already spending close to £200million this summer.

There are still a couple of areas within Slot’s team that could do with an upgrade, and with the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez potentially on their way out of Anfield, there’s plenty of money still to come in.

A new centre-back is a must this summer as the Reds only have three senior options after Jarell Quansah was sold for £35million to Bayer Leverkusen.

And, it’s hard to look past Guehi as the stand-out target.

The defender is arguably England’s best centre-back, and the fact that the 2026 World Cup is just around the corner means that he’ll be gunning for a starting spot in Thomas Tuchel’s team.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but when the fee Guehi is available for is taken into account, it feels like a move for the Englishman is a no-brainer.
