Liverpool may have moved a step closer to signing Alexander Isak after intriguing Newcastle update

There’s no hiding from the fact that Liverpool’s dream striker target this summer is Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

The towering Swede dominated the vast majority of opponents he faced in the Premier League last season, with the former Real Sociedad man establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the top flight.

His partnership with Anthony Gordon for Eddie Howe’s men was second-to-none with their goals and assists, once again helping the Magpies to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool have shown a fair amount of interest in both attackers, but with Newcastle setting a rather hefty price tag for Isak, it felt like a move was off the table this summer.

That is, until Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on Newcastle’s transfer plans.

Newcastle are now ‘keen’ on signing Hugo Ekitike this summer

Hugo Ekitike is another striker who is highly sought-after this summer.

The Frenchman had an impressive season with Eintracht Frankfurt throughout the 2024-25 campaign, with the Bundesliga outfit setting his fee at around £85million.

And, as per a new report from Romano, it seems like the Magpies have now entered the race for the attacker.

“Hugo Ekitike keeps attracting interest from Premier League with Newcastle keen on the striker,” he wrote via his personal X account.

“More Premier League clubs remain also informed on situation, after Liverpool and Chelsea calls in June.

“Al Hilal and Al Qadsiah called in recent weeks but his priority is Europe.”

Liverpool will have one less striker to target if Newcastle sign Hugo Ekitike

Ever since it was reported that Ekitike would be available to sign this summer, Liverpool have been one of the main contenders for his transfer.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are another Premier League side who have been heavily linked with the Frenchman, but now they’ve already signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, there’s not really any need for them to try to sign him.

One of the main areas that Slot needs to bolster this summer is his number nine, that is, especially if Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz choose to exit Anfield over the next few weeks.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but if Newcastle do end up signing Ekitike, it could end up opening the doors for the Reds to go after Isak.
