Liverpool see potential buyer drop out of Darwin Nunez race as exit options begin to narrow

Darwin Nunez feels like the most likely player to exit Liverpool over the next couple of months.

The Uruguay international was in below-par form once again during the 2024-25 Premier League campaign as he only managed to score seven goals across all competitions.

This has resulted in Liverpool exploring the market for new strikers, with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike linked with a move to Anfield.

And, although there may have been a fair few options on the table for Nunez to explore at the start of June, it now seems like his options are dwindling.

AC Milan have pulled out of the race to sign Darwin Nunez

A whole host of Serie A teams have been touted to have an interest in the Uruguay international, with Napoli leading the way at the moment.

AC Milan did initially throw their hat into the ring, but with Liverpool sticking to their guns and demanding a premium fee for the attacker, it seems like they’ve now dropped out of the race.

That is according to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, who, while speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, gave an insight into how things are panning out for Nunez at the moment.

“I told you exclusively how Milan was one of the clubs that asked for information on Darwin Nunez, in addition to Napoli, who is clearly ahead,” he said.

“But De Laurentiis’ club has not yet found the basis for an agreement with Liverpool. The two clubs are discussing, but to date, there are no steps forward in this direction.

“Always keep an eye on the name of Lorenzo Lucca for Napoli. For Milan, despite a high level of approval for Nunez, in terms of costs, it is an almost impracticable path, difficult to reach.”

Liverpool need to meet Napoli in the middle

Now that Milos Kerkez has been brought in, the main area that needs reinforcing within the Reds’ ranks is their strike force.

Indeed, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz did an impressive job when called upon by Slot to play as the number nine, but both attackers are far better suited to playing on the wing.

Both Ekitike and Gyokeres have been heavily linked with a move, and the sooner Nunez is sold, the quicker Slot can bring in a new face.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what the Dutchman’s team will look like in their opening game of the season, but one thing is for sure: it’ll be a completely new-look squad with a point to prove.
