Giorgi Mamardashvili was one of two signings that Liverpool made last season.
The Georgian goalkeeper was sent straight back out on loan to Valencia due to Caoimhin Kelleher’s prominence in the squad.
However, now that the Irishman is gone and Mamardashvili is set to return to Anfield, there’s a clear route for the Georgian to make his way into Arne Slot’s squad as Alisson’s back-up.

Mamardashvili has also said that he won’t be looking for another loan deal during the 2025-26 season, so it’s not a surprise to see the ‘keeper already preparing himself for life in England.
Giorgi Mamardashvili has been learning English ahead of his Liverpool switch
Mamardashvili is Georgia’s number one and once again found himself in good form for Valencia, helping them retain their status as a La Liga outfit, with the help of Carlos Corberan, of course.
A new report from The Athletic has outlined that to prepare himself for life as a Liverpool player, Mamardashvili has been learning English so that he can communicate with his teammates upon arrival.
The report also states that the goalkeeper is ‘confident’ about taking up his position in Liverpool’s first-team squad.
Not only does this outline his commitment to forging a career at Liverpool, but it also shows how much earning a move to a team of the Anfield outfit’s stature means to him.

Comparing the statistics of Giorgi Mamardashvili and Caoimhin Kelleher
Kelleher’s Anfield exit is likely one that’s going to sting Liverpool fans for a while.
The Irishman was nothing but a professional during his time in Merseyside, with the ‘keeper never kicking up a fuss about being Alisson’s number two.
The 2024-25 campaign is likely one of Kelleher’s best in recent memory due to the amount of game time he was handed thanks to the multiple injuries Alisson suffered throughout the season.
Mamardashvili was also in fine form for Valencia, with the ‘keeper single-handedly earning them points on occasion.
| Player | Games | Goals conceded | Clean sheets |
| Giorgi Mamardashvili | 34 | 48 | 8 |
| Caoimhin Kelleher | 20 | 20 | 9 |
Indeed, both are exceptional talents between the sticks, and both would be able to be a first-team player for Liverpool if Alisson weren’t at the club.
However, seeing as though the Brazilian is one of the best ‘keepers in the world, it’s hard to complain about being his deputy.
Kelleher and Mamardashvili didn’t play the same number of games, but when the quality of the leagues are taken into account and the age of both players, on paper, it feels like Liverpool made the right choice.
Granted, it’ll take a bit of getting used to for Mamardashvili to all of a sudden be second-choice, but in the grand scheme of things, it feels like a good move for his career, especially since Alisson will be his mentor.
