‘Stunning’ Virgil van Dijk mural revealed in Liverpool as Reds fans pick which player should be honoured next

Liverpool supporters are gearing up for their biggest celebration in 35 years this weekend.

The Reds have spent most of the past month enjoying their status as newly-crowned champions of England.

But if the scenes at Anfield following Liverpool’s win over Tottenham last month were wild, then Sunday could be another step further again.

Virgil van Dijk is the man who will lift the Premier League trophy into the Merseyside sky after Liverpool’s game against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

Van Dijk has had another excellent season, and although his legendary status at Liverpool has long since been secured, he has gone to the next level as a Premier League winning captain.

To recognise his ascension to being a genuine great of the club, a new mural of Van Dijk has sprung up in Liverpool. And as they prepare to see their team’s crowning moment on Sunday, Reds fans have been applauding the piece of street art.

Over the past seven or eight years it has been commonplace to see murals of Liverpool players and legendary figures in and around the city.

From modern day heroes such as Jurgen Klopp and Roberto Firmino to past legends like Ian Rush and John Barnes, there are plenty of tributes dotted around.

Now, Van Dijk has joined that pantheon. As painted by street artist MurWalls, a new image of the Dutchman has been completed. And supporters love it.

“I need a pic of Virgil visiting his mural ASAP. This is absolutely stunning,” said one fan. “That Van Dijk mural is simply exceptional. It’s absolutely fantastic work by all involved,” added another.

“No one does murals quite like us,” someone else claimed. “One of the best defenders ever fully deserved,” was another verdict.

Meanwhile, with Van Dijk’s already iconic phrase ‘it was always Liverpool’ adorned besides the mural, some fans couldn’t help but bring up Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“It was always Liverpool. Gets it more than the ‘scouser’ in the team,” said one fan. “Please tell me this was painted over the 66 just a lad from Liverpool painting,” another added.

With the likes of Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk now permanently adorned on walls around the city, other supporters have named which players should be honoured next.

“We need a new Salah one with prem trophy on Sunday,” someone suggested.

“We need an Alisson mural please,” was another fan’s proposal. “Robbo after that!!!”

Will Trent Alexander-Arnold mural be removed?

The new Van Dijk mural is indeed a stunning piece of work and really captures the likeness of Liverpool’s legendary No. 4.

But as supporters’ reactions show, it has also thrown up further questions of whether the tribute to Alexander-Arnold near Anfield should remain.

Unfortunately, murals are vulnerable to vandalism and given the strength of feeling towards Alexander-Arnold at the moment, it may be unwise to keep it on display.

It would be a shame if the ‘normal lad from Liverpool’ wall was to be removed but at this point, it probably feels wise to pre-empt any potential harm being done to it.

As for Van Dijk, his face is likely to be proudly displayed for years and years to come. A true legend of the club now cemented in its fabric.
