Luis Diaz confirms Liverpool contract talks and declares how long he wants to stay at Anfield for

Liverpool endured a strange day at the office on Sunday after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal.

The Reds’ matches are effectively meaningless at this point, as they simply play out their remaining Premier League fixtures.

What was already a strange game took on a sinister air midway through the second-half, when Trent Alexander-Arnold emerged to boos from the Anfield crowd.

But although reaction to Alexander-Arnold’s entrance has dominated headlines since the game, there were plenty of other things to talk about from a Liverpool point of view as well.

One that has been far too overlooked was that Luis Diaz got himself yet another goal. The Colombian brought his tally to 13 in the Premier League and 17 in all competitions. A healthy return.

Reports have suggested that Diaz is set to enter into new contract talks with Liverpool once the season comes to a close. And speaking after Sunday’s game, the 28-year-old confirmed these rumours.

Luis Diaz confirms Liverpool contract talks

Diaz has been one of Liverpool’s best players towards the end of the season. The No. 7 has four goals and one assist in his last five appearances for the Reds.

Although his current contract still has two years left to run, in this kind of form Diaz certainly deserves an extension.

And having been asked about his situation by Colombian outlet Telemundo Deportes following Sunday’s result, Diaz confirmed that talks are set to take place and declared his wish to stay at Liverpool for the foreseeable future.

“Since the first day I arrived, I’ve always been happy, calm, enjoying the football played at this great team,” he said.

“We’ll be talking about it [about renewing], we’ll talk about it. For me, I’d stay however many years it takes.

“It also depends on the club, everything. These are details that are worked out separately. But I’m very calm, happy and enjoying the Premier League.”

Diaz reacts to Trent Alexander-Arnold boos

As well as talking about the possibility of an extended stay at Liverpool, Diaz was also asked to give his reaction to the boos heard for Alexander-Arnold.

Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were visibly unhappy with Liverpool fans at the final whistle, but Diaz was more diplomatic in his response.

“I have no say in that,” he said. “I can talk about Trent because he’s a person who has worked very well, given everything to the club. I think he’s contributed what he wanted, he won everything.

“So, I think he’s leaving through the front door. He is a great player, a great person and he has enormous quality. I’m very proud to play alongside him.”

Unlike Alexander-Arnold, it seems more certain that Diaz will be at Liverpool next season and perhaps for another three or four years into the future. But let’s wait and see how the talks go.
