Mohamed Salah emphatically answers 2018 Pep Guardiola question as Liverpool legend leaves Sergio Aguero behind

Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations took full focus on Sunday as the Reds won the league in front of their supporters.

It was a glorious day at Anfield, with Liverpool finally celebrating with their fans after being robbed of the chance to do so in 2020.

Having been the main man all season long, Mohamed Salah was front and centre of proceedings. The Egyptian had been desperate to experience another title win with Liverpool.

With so much happening on the day, it was somewhat overlooked that by scoring against Tottenham, Salah had moved up yet another place in the all-time Premier League scoring chart.

The 32-year-old was determined to get his goal and after firing an excellent strike past Guglielmo Vicario, Salah moved onto 185 English top division strikes.

Significantly, that placed him one goal and one place above Man City legend Sergio Aguero as the Premier League’s all-time non-English top scorer. In rising above Aguero, Salah answered a question Pep Guardiola posed in 2018 once and for all.

Aguero was a phenomenal goal scorer for Man City across ten seasons with the Citizens. For Salah to move ahead of the Argentinian is a really big moment.

It also brings to mind what Guardiola said about comparisons between the two players at the start of Salah’s second season with Liverpool in October 2018.

“He (Salah) is younger and it was his first year back in England since his time at Chelsea, so we will see in the future,” the Man City boss said ahead of a fixture between the two teams.

“A guy who has the quality to score 50 goals in a season always has that quality. But football is all about ups and downs.”

“Salah remains an excellent player and will score goals in the future. When you are in there scenting goals sometimes this happens.

“Sergio has scored a lot of goals but there were periods when he didn’t score goals. How many years has Sergio scored all those goals, eight or nine years?” Guardiola posed. “For Salah it was the first one so we will see in seven or eight years.”

Salah has top three in his sights

Although he pays homage to Salah, there is little doubt that Guardiola would not have expected the Liverpool man to match Aguero’s feats.

City’s all-time top scorer was an out-and-out goal scorer who seemed to find the net without even trying. Salah is not that kind of player.

Still, the relentlessness of Liverpool’s Egyptian King has put him above Aguero and in sight of the Premier League’s top scorers in history.

Salah needs two goals to equal Andy Cole’s tally of 187 and with four games left to play this season he’ll be desperate to make it into the top four.

From there the No.11 will be aiming to join the exclusive 200 club, with only Alan Shearer, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney able to hit that figure in the division’s 33-year history. Salah needs 24 more goals to move ahead of Rooney into third place.
