How likely Liverpool are to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa as surprise transfer plan emerges

After spending a day or two to celebrate winning the Premier League, Liverpool were straight back to business on Wednesday.

The players were given Monday and Tuesday off after securing the league title at Anfield, finally reporting back for duty on Wednesday.

But as footage emerged of the triumphant Liverpool squad returning to a party atmosphere at the AXA Training Centre, it’s likely that their bosses were already hard at work.

For Arne Slot and Richard Hughes, there is unlikely to have been a let-up as they plan for how to improve this Liverpool team even further next season.

A busy transfer window has been promised, with an expectation that Liverpool will splash the cash.

With that in mind, some interesting rumours have started to emerge in the press, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers the latest to be linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool keeping tabs on Morgan Rogers

We wrote recently how Liverpool fans should be getting excited over Rogers after journalist David Ornstein hinted that he could leave Villa this summer.

Ornstein is a well-respected voice around the transfer windows, perhaps rivalled only by Fabrizio Romano in terms of all-round reliability.

And it is Romano who has now moved to confirm Liverpool’s interest in Rogers, writing for Give Me Sport that the Reds have been actively scouting the 22-year-old. However, Romano does concede that Liverpool feel a deal is difficult to do, but are ready to move in case of a ‘surprise.’

“Sources have told GIVEMESPORT that Liverpool have also sent their scouts several times to follow Rogers’ progress at Villa, considering him as an ideal player for the future,” says the journalist.

“But both Chelsea and Liverpool consider the deal as ‘difficult’ for this summer as Aston Villa have no plans to let Rogers leave.

“He’s seen as a crucial part of Unai Emery’s project and the club have already made a big profit by selling Jhon Duran to Al Nassr in January, so an exit for Rogers is considered as ‘complicated’ by those close to Liverpool,” Romano adds.

“For sure, Chelsea and Liverpool both like Rogers and will keep monitoring his progress, then in the case of any surprise movements or potential exits, both clubs will be attentive this summer or in the future.”

Is there any chance this happens?

In our opinion, Rogers would indeed be an ideal signing for Liverpool this summer. The Reds are seemingly in the market for a more attacking midfielder and the £16m Villa man would fit the bill wonderfully.

As Stiliyan Petrov observed after watching Rogers score a hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League in January, the former Man City youth product is a star in the making.

“He was just outstanding, we saw everything from the young man. He looked like a mature player,” Petrov told TNT Sports.

“He looked like he is going to be a star. He could have scored another two.”

It sounds as though it may be difficult to prise Rogers from Villa, with a big fee likely needed. But if Unai Emery’s side do not make the Champions League, there is no reason this should be an impossible one for Liverpool. It’s certainly one to keep track of.
