Liverpool fans are all making the same point after Manchester United’s dramatic Europa League win over Lyon

Liverpool fans have had to wait patiently to see their team in action during a midweek schedule of crazy European action.

In a fair world the Reds would have been competing in the Champions League quarter-finals ahead of their Sunday clash with Leicester City.

However, after topping the league phase table, Liverpool ran into a PSG side who’s name may very well be on the trophy.

PSG joined Arsenal, Barcelona and Inter Milan in the final four of the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday, before the Europa League took centre-stage on Thursday.

It was a rollercoaster night, as Man United staged a dramatic collapse and then an equally incredible comeback to oust Lyon and move into the semi-finals.

With Tottenham Hotspur also qualifying via an impressive win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Liverpool fans were keen to point out something about their Premier League competitors at the final whistle.

Liverpool fans hit back at Premier League quality claims

Throughout Liverpool’s march towards the Premier League title, there have been growing suggestions that this is a particularly weak campaign for the division.

However, with United and Spurs struggling in 14th and 15th place respectively, Reds fans were all making the point that teams doing poorly domestically are doing well in Europe. Hence, the quality has never been higher.

“16th and 14th place teams in the premier league are in the semi of Europe’s second competition and they told me it’s the lowest quality prem season,” said one supporter. “You actually can’t hide anymore.”

“I’ve said it before, but for those who say the Premier League is weak this season (because Liverpool are top), how is it then that Arsenal get to a CL semi final & two teams Utd & Spurs (14th &15th) Europa semi finals have all done so well in Europe?” posed another.

“The weakest premier league ever has supplied 3 European semi finalists,” one fan sarcastically pointed out, with others striking a similar tone. “I see the weakest ever premier league has got 4 teams in the European semi finals…” was the view of someone else.

“What a weak premier league,” joked another. “Weakest premier league of all time. Arsenal in CL semis. Liverpool winning premier league finished on top of CL group stages out of 36 teams in Europe. Newcastle are third in league and beat LFC in league cup final. Very weak league, so weak.”

“They were trying to push the narrative that this is the weakest Premier league season all because Liverpool are gonna win the title. Shows how big we are,” one supporter deduced.

“14th and 15th in the Premier League are in the Europa League semi finals. The quality has never been lower though because Liverpool are about to win it etc,” railed another.

Who will win the Europa League?

Incredibly, the Premier League still has a chance to complete a clean sweep of the three European trophies this season.

Arsenal have a real chance in the Champions League, although will do well to get past PSG and then Barca or Inter, while Chelsea are heavy favourites for the Conference League.

Meanwhile, there is still a chance of a first all-English Europa League final since 2019, when Arsenal met Chelsea.

United face a tricky test against Athletic Bilbao in their semi-final, while Tottenham will fancy their chances against Norwegian over-achievers Bodo/Glimt.

2019 was perhaps the zenith for the Premier League, with both finals at the time being all English affairs. We’re not sure either of United or Spurs will collect the Europa League this time, our money would be on Athletic. But, in the meantime, it’s safe to say this tired narrative against Liverpool can be retired.
