Liverpool supporters had to watch on enviously on Wednesday night as their European rivals competed in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Having topped the initial league phase this season, the Reds had looked like being one of the heavy favourites to lift the trophy in Munich.

However, after being unlucky to run into an exciting PSG side in the last-16, Liverpool were dumped out on penalties.

PSG continued their match towards what many feel is a likely crowning with a win over Aston Villa in the quarters.

And after Arsenal completed their job of defeating Real Madrid on Wednesday, the Gunners will now meet Luis Enrique’s team in the semi-finals.

With Barcelona set to face Inter Milan in the other side of the draw, Liverpool fans have decided which team lifting the Champions League would be best for Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Liverpool fans back Inter for Champions League

Had Liverpool navigated past PSG, they would have fancied themselves to have beaten Villa to set up a semi-final against Arsenal.

Instead, having been dumped out, many had concluded that Salah’s chances of winning the award for the world’s best individual player this season had vanished. But after Wednesday’s results, Liverpool fans on X think it might be back on for Mo.

“Inter gets the Champions League Liverpool gets the Premier League and Salah the Ballon d’Or,” one fan predicted.

“I actually want inter to win the [Champions] league,” added another. “Then Salah will have a better chance to win ballon d’Or.”

“If inter beat Barca surely Salah bdor case is back,” one claimed, with another adding “The dream is on, just 3 more wins Inter Milan.”

“Salah Ballond’or conversations back on so I hear,” someone else suggested. “Inter Milan we all believe in you.” “So we just need Barca out the & the Ballon d’Or is Salah’s, right?” posed another.

While many were nailing their colours to the Inter post, though, someone else pointed out that Arsenal winning the thing could actually help Salah as well.

“Inter or Arsenal ucl and Salah wins B’dor wow,” they said.”

Is Salah’s Ballon d’Or claim back on track?

Whoever ends up winning the Champions League from here, Liverpool fans believed Wednesday’s games highlighted that Salah is still far and away the best player in the world right now.

“This game has been good for Mohamed Salah’s Ballon D’Or chances,” one said, referencing the fact Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jnr and Jude Bellingham all failed to shine for Real Madrid.

“Mohamed Salah’s Ballon D’or charge is alive,” claimed another. “These champions league matches couldn’t make it any more clear that Mo Salah deserves the Ballon d’or,” said someone else.

“So this takes Mbappe out of the Ballon d’or talks now,” one more fan asserted. “It’s either Salah or Raphinha.”

While Raphinha – or Lamine Yamal – could yet turn up for Barca and claim them the trophy, or Ousmane Dembele might have the deciding contribution for PSG, it’s without doubt that the likes of Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham and indeed Bayern’s Harry Kane losing on Wednesday has enhanced Salah’s chances of an unlikely golden ball.
