Virgil van Dijk hints that his new Liverpool contract could be signed next week

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, the Netherlands international suggested that his new deal with Liverpool could be signed next week, with the Reds finally getting a move on in securing the futures of their key players.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid, committing the likes of Salah and Van Dijk to new contracts is massive for Liverpool, who Arne Slot can realistically build his new squad around heading into next season.

And official confirmation on Van Dijk’s new contract could be made soon, with the defender saying after the full-time whistle at Anfield this afternoon: “These things [the own goal] unfortunately happen and it was time to make it right.

“On to the next one. I am very happy to captain my 100th game for Liverpool, it was an emotional day with Hillsborough and that was the main focus. One step closer to all our dreams. Everyone knows how much I love this club and let’s see what next week will look like.”

Virgil van Dijk’s new contract arguably as big as Mohamed Salah’s

Salah breaking the Premier League goal contribution record this afternoon has once again highlighted why Liverpool were more than right to hand the Egyptian international a new contract heading into the summer.

Yet with Van Dijk at the top of his game and showing no sign of slowing down for Liverpool, the defender signing a new contract with the Reds is arguably as big for the Anfield side than Salah committing his future to the Merseyside giants.

Indeed, Van Dijk has been one of the best defenders in the world this season and would be a player that is impossible for Liverpool to replace should he leave this summer, and tying the centre-back down to new terms is nothing short of huge for the Reds heading into the off-season.
