Liverpool claimed a dramatic win against West Ham thanks to a late winner from captain Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch international came up clutch for the Reds with an 89th-minute goal to secure all three points for the home side just a few minutes after West Ham had levelled the game up thanks to an own goal from Andy Robertson.

With Jamie Carragher lauding Mohamed Salah for his assist for Luis Diaz’s opener, Liverpool’s defending for West Ham’s equaliser highlighted just how stark the drop off was from the Anfield side between the first half and the second half.

And Carragher noted how ‘furious’ Robertson was with Van Dijk after the Scotland international’s own goal for Liverpool.

Andy Robertson left fuming with Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool own goal

Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of the match, Carragher spotted how Robertson was left fuming with Van Dijk’s positioning for the own goal, with the pundit noting that a lack of communication led to the moment.

With Van Dijk redeeming himself moments later for Liverpool, the Anfield captain got away with one big time this afternoon on Merseyside, where Robertson would have had some strong words for the Dutchman had the game ended in a draw.

Carragher said when analysing Robertson’s reaction towards Van Dijk after the own goal: “Robertson is furious, he’s not happy with Van Dijk, it’s just a mess. You see how furious Robertson is, when actually it’s Van Dijk.

“They almost tackle each other! You have to look at communication, Robertson has to be screaming at him. Maybe he was and Van Dijk wasn’t listening. You can’t see it hasn’t been coming. Liverpool have been awful in the second half, West Ham deserve to be in front.”

Liverpool proved their Premier League champion credentials

It’s a football cliche as old as time, but Liverpool’s scrappy win this afternoon was a mark of a true Premier League champion given how likely West Ham looked to come away from today’s game with a famous result.

With only six points needed to confirm their status as English champions for only the second time this century, the finish line is well within sight for Liverpool, who have been the best team in the Premier League by some distance this season.

And winning ugly is what’s needed for teams to go all the way in the top-flight, with Liverpool managing just that this afternoon against West Ham, who will be fuming with themselves that the couldn’t get anything from this fixture.
