Alan Shearer says he saw something happen to Liverpool against Fulham for basically the first time this season

Liverpool have had to deal with a barrage of criticism this weekend after losing to Fulham in the Premier League.

The Reds began Sunday hoping to go 14 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.

However, after putting in one of their worst performances of the season, Liverpool succumbed to a 3-2 defeat.

There were some bright spots for the Reds, with Conor Bradley standing out during the second-half. But by and large Liverpool simply weren’t good enough.

For those watching closely, it was the continuation of a worrying trend for the Reds, who have lost three of their last four games.

But for Premier League top scorer Alan Shearer, he thought he saw something happen to Liverpool for the first time in a long time on Sunday.

There were plenty of reasons behind Liverpool’s defeat on Sunday. But Alexis Mac Allister pinned the loss on individual mistakes and he was not wrong.

Unfortunately, many of those errors came via Liverpool’s back four. And according to Shearer, it was a rare bad day at the office for the Reds’ usually reliable defence.

“Even when they haven’t played well they’ve done what every great team has to do, they’ve just somehow managed to get results,” the pundit told The Rest Is Football.

“They’ve been absolutely magnificent and they’ve earned this gap, they’re going to win it, it’s just a matter of when. Even when Mac Allister scored that absolute rocket today I’m thinking ‘here we go.'”

“But then they were terrible defensively – and we haven’t said this many times this season – they were awful, awful defensively,” Shearer added.

“Van Dijk got the run-around, Robertson had an absolute nightmare, Konate didn’t do as well as he normally does, so defensively they were awful and I don’t think we’ve said that at all this season. You let them have an off day but it’s just a matter of when [they win the title].”

Will Arne Slot make changes against West Ham?

Given how bad the likes of Van Dijk, Konate, Robertson and Curtis Jones were defensively at Fulham, it begs the question of whether Arne Slot will change things up.

Frank Leboeuf thinks Jarell Quansah will be angry with Slot after being overlooked once again, but it seems unlikely the Liverpool academy graduate will be brought in next weekend.

With a full week between the fixtures, it should be expected that Slot will stay true to form and pick more or less the same team once again.

The one change that is likely to come is Conor Bradley returning at right-back. That should at least help Liverpool.

For Konate, Van Dijk and Robertson, they will probably go again. When all is said and done, this will perhaps go down as collectively one of their worst performances of the season. At least it can only go up from here.
