Liverpool’s transfer plans for 2025 may have been exposed as £84m Richard Hughes plan comes to light

Liverpool look set to be busy during the 2025 summer transfer window, with plenty of change expected at Anfield.

Regardless of whether or not the Reds manage to keep hold of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, they need to do some business.

Excitingly, there is a growing feeling that Liverpool are ready to bolster their forward line this summer.

Darwin Nunez looks likely to leave, with Arne Slot on the lookout for a new starting striker. Links to Alexander Isak are gathering pace.

Centre-forward aside, though, it is starting to become clear that Liverpool are also ready to do some work on the left side of their attack.

And after a plan from 2024 was brought to light this week, Richard Hughes looks ready to make an important addition.

Liverpool targeting new left-sided attacker

Liverpool are well stocked on the left side of their attack and have been for a number of years.

Slot has rotated between Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo this season, with Gakpo emerging as the more potent goal threat of the two.

However, it has been reliably reported this week that Liverpool tried to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in 2024, before leaving him on-loan at Napoli for the 2024/25 season.

Slot and Hughes clearly had it in mind to rebuild the left side of the forward line in the summer of 2025. Given that Liverpool are said to have offered £84m to sign Kvaratskhelia, it seems they are prepared to go big in order to do that.

Clearly, they were happy with Diaz and Gakpo for the season ahead, but it seems that a plan has already been in place to move on from either one or the other in 2025.

As a result of his ongoing contract uncertainty, it’s probable that Diaz is the man under threat. It would not be a surprise to see the Colombian leave and a replacement arrive in the months ahead.

Who could Liverpool be targeting?

We quite liked Liverpool’s plan to sign Kvaratskhelia and park him at Napoli for another season. It would have set the Reds up very nicely a year ahead of time.

However, having since joined PSG, the Georgian is no longer on the market. Liverpool have missed their chance.

It could have been that it was Kvaratskhelia or no one for Hughes and Liverpool and they are instead happy to proceed with Diaz and Gakpo into the future.

But Diaz has been relentlessly linked with Barcelona. His form has tailed off in the second half of the season and it now feels like an exit could be good timing for everyone involved.

If Liverpool are to then enter the left winger market, then there are plenty of exciting options out there. Nico Williams is a reported target for the Reds and a player like the Basque would feel like a good fit.

Or having already expressed an interest in him seemingly even before the Kvaratskhelia arrangement, could it finally be time for Anthony Gordon to return home to Anfield? Gakpo will have a say in at all, but this is one to watch.
