Liverpool’s Joshua Kimmich stance revealed after Bayern Munich withdraw contract offer

Liverpool look likely to be busy in the summer transfer market as they aim to build on life under Arne Slot.

Slot has had a magnificent first season at Anfield so far, with the Reds well positioned to win the Premier League title.

But having barely made a signing since arriving in 2024, the Liverpool head coach is still largely working with a group assembled by predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

While it remains to be seen what Slot will prioritise in the market, one player who has been heavily linked with Liverpool has been Bayern Munich stalwart Joshua Kimmich.

Kimmich looked set to sign a new contract at Bayern recently, but after the German giants withdrew from discussions, the 30-year-old is now heading towards a free transfer exit.

And as his contract at the Allianz Arena runs into its final few months, Rousing The Kop transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey has weighed in on what this could mean for Liverpool.

Liverpool not out of Joshua Kimmich race

Along with Liverpool’s three of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kimmich is set to be one of the most high-profile free agents this summer.

Although he’s moving towards veteran status, the former RB Leipzig man could solve two issues within the Liverpool squad heading into this summer: in midfield and at right-back.

And according to Bailey, the Reds are aware of the quality Kimmich could bring and are not yet out of the race to sign him.

“Bayern are not off the table that’s for sure,” says the journalist. “Obviously they’ve pulled this offer but I don’t think they’re completely out of the picture.

“Liverpool are not discounted from this at all, they’ve not pulled back on it. He is a player who would suit the squad and I think the player’s just taking his time really. He’s keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I don’t think he’s top of Liverpool’s list but they haven’t pulled back on it too much,” Bailey adds. “I think there’s an interest there and they’re keeping informed on it. Bayern backing away has given the other interested teams an extra impetus.”

Kimmich still key for Bayern

The overarching feeling here is that Bayern should still be considered favourites to extend Kimmich’s contract.

However, as Liverpool well know, time is running out on getting something done before the end of the season.

It would be interesting to see how Liverpool supporters react to a signing like Kimmich. The Champions League winner would arrive on big wages after all.

But there is little doubt that Kimmich is still a key player for Bayern. He has only failed to start one of Bayern’s 34 Bundesliga and Champions League matches this season.

As Liverpool continue trying to sort out some contract situations of there own, it’s going to be an interesting few weeks ahead of this front, too.
