Jeremy Doku suggests Liverpool weren’t even that good during 2-0 win over Man City

Liverpool strolled to a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds had expected to be in for a tough afternoon in Manchester, having not won at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League since 2015.

But City are at a low ebb after losing against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

And although they weren’t brilliant themselves against Aston Villa in midweek, Liverpool must have known they had a real chance at the Etihad.

The importance of the game was heightened after Arsenal unexpectedly lost against West Ham on Saturday and Liverpool locked in.

After scoring two first-half goals, the Reds put their backs to the wall and went 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. But according to City winger Jeremy Doku, Liverpool weren’t even that good.

Jeremy Doku not impressed by Liverpool

Doku was heavily linked with Liverpool before he ultimately joined Man City in 2023.

Since then, the Belgian has been a slightly frustrating player for the champions. He excites a lot and regularly beats his full-back, but there’s not enough end product.

That was the story of Doku’s game again on Sunday as he seemed to have the beating of Trent Alexander-Arnold but didn’t do much with it.

And speaking via BBC Sport after the game, the 22-year-old was clearly frustrated and showed a little bit of sour grapes.

“To be fair if I look at the game I don’t think that they were much better than us,” Doku said. “Two goals, one set piece and the second goal was a long ball, so well done to them.

“We know their qualities and that they like to play in behind. They did well and after it is hard to come back against a team that defends well like that.”

Doku gives Alexander-Arnold a difficult time

To be fair to Doku, he was probably City’s most dangerous player against Liverpool.

The Belgium international was a handful for Alexander-Arnold and speaking after the game, Doku suggested that he was let down by some of his teammate’s finishing.

“I passed him [Alexander-Arnold] a lot of times but it was then the final pass or I don’t know,” he said.

“The most important thing after passing is to create something from it, and I played some good balls in front of the goal but we have to score.”
