Dominik Szoboszlai admits Liverpool wanted revenge after Tottenham’s Carabao Cup semi-final celebrations

Liverpool have a Carabao Cup final to look forward to next month, with Arne Slot aiming to win his first trophy with the Reds.

Supporters will obviously be hoping for bigger prizes on the horizon in May, but a trip to Wembley is always worthwhile.

Newcastle United lie in wait for Liverpool, after comfortably seeing off Arsenal in the semi-final.

Liverpool also took a North London scalp, hammering Tottenham 4-0 at Anfield after losing the first-leg 1-0.

The Reds were unlucky to lose at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, with Lucas Bergvall controversially scoring a later winner just after escaping a blatant second yellow card.

But according to Dominik Szoboszlai, the actions of Bergvall and his teammates at the final whistle provoked a response from Liverpool back at Anfield.

Tottenham of course had every right to celebrate their win back in January. Bergvall is a young player and scoring past Alisson Becker to win the game would have meant a lot to him.

Spurs were also on a terrible run at the time and had legitimate hope of reaching the Carabao Cup final after a first-leg victory.

However, just as when the same group of players beat Liverpool in 2023, the celebrations felt way too over the top.

Tottenham still had to keep the Reds out at Anfield, which they ultimately didn’t even come close to doing.

And speaking to Hungarian outlet Nemzeti Sport, Szoboszlai has claimed that seeing Spurs celebrate ‘as if they had won the whole competition’ added inspiration for Liverpool to turn the tie around.

“We are happy that it came together,” said the 24-year-old. “The first leg didn’t go as we wanted, but after seeing the Tottenham players celebrate as if they had won the whole competition, we took the second leg a little personally.”

Szoboszlai has been a key player for Liverpool since arriving in 2023. However, the Hungary captain has not always been consistent.

Jamie Carragher has called for more goals from Szoboszlai and having found the net in that second-leg against Spurs, he is starting to deliver on that.

According to Liverpool’s No.8, his goal against Southampton in November was a ‘turning point’ for him to score on a more regular basis.

“My first goal of the season against Southampton was a turning point,” says Szoboszlai. “The first is always the hardest, but you have to keep trying. I want to add as much as I can to the team’s success every time, with assists and goals.”

“Now the goals are starting to come, and there are solutions that I didn’t have before,” he adds. “There was a turning point, and I think I’m on the right track now.”
