Liverpool sent a young squad to play out their FA Cup fourth round tie with Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.
The Reds were always likely to make a raft of changes with one eye on their Premier League clash against Everton on Wednesday.
And that’s exactly what Arne Slot did, swapping 10 players from the midweek win over Tottenham.
The only Liverpool player to keep his place was Caoimhin Kelleher, who saw a very makeshift back four picked in front of him.
With James McConnell starting at right-back, it was at least pleasing to see Joe Gomez back in the side for the first time since December the 29th.
However, Gomez’s afternoon was ended after barely 10 minutes, the 27-year-old going off to be replaced by debutant Isaac Mabaya. It was a disappointing moment for Gomez, but according to journalist Ian Doyle, it perhaps wasn’t all bad news.

Joe Gomez not visibly injured
It was a real boost for fans to see Gomez back in the team on Sunday. With the Liverpool fixture list still as hectic as ever, having the versatile defender back will be a big help.
Unfortunately, Gomez has struggled with injuries throughout his time with the Reds. A problem has often felt to be just around the corner.
After only just returning from a hamstring issue, Gomez going down again was a concerning sight for supporters.
But as Doyle posted on X, the No.2 did not appear to have a visible issue as he left the pitch at Home Park.
“Gomez looked like was walking off pretty freely,” said the reporter.
“Couldn’t see an obvious injury. Might be unwell. We will find out soon enough.”
How did Isaac Mabaya play?
Given the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley in the Liverpool squad, Mabaya may have had a feeling that he would make his debut on Sunday.
He would not have expected it to come quite so early, but he should have been ready. And to be fair to the 20-year-old he slotted in well on the right of the Reds defence.
There was one poor, overhit touch when entering the final third and a silly booking picked up for kicking the ball away, but Mabaya did just fine at Home Park.
With Slot set to face the media very soon, the extent of Gomez’s problem will be revealed imminently. Let’s hope for some good news.
