There’s something ‘people don’t see’ about Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after Tottenham goal

Liverpool are through to the Carabao Cup final after thrashing Tottenham 4-0 at Anfield.

The Reds needed to overturn a 1-0 deficit having been beaten by Spurs away from home in January.

But with Ange Postecoglou’s team depleted through injury, Liverpool knew they’d have a big chance in-front of their home fans.

In the end, it was straightforward for the Reds. Tottenham put up a fight in the first-half, but after Cody Gakpo brought the tie level, their defences melted away.

After Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot and Dominik Szoboszlai added a third, Virgil van Dijk put the cherry on top with a close range header.

It was fitting that Van Dijk had the last say, having been the man who won Liverpool the Carabao Cup last year. And after watching the Reds captain put in another masterclass, Dion Dublin was keen to highlight something that ‘people don’t see’ about Virgil.

What ‘people don’t see’ about Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk has the chance to lead Liverpool to consecutive Carabao Cup titles when the Reds face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16th.

The 33-year-old is exactly the man the Reds need in these kinds of occasions, and rose to the challenge yet again.

There was even time for some trolling from the captain as Van Dijk clashed with Richarlison before the Spurs man went off injured.

But as well as everything he gave Liverpool on the ball, Dublin was keen to highlight the other side of the Dutchman’s game as well.

“A captain’s performance,” the former striker told BBC Sport.

“What people don’t see is Virgil Van Dijk is always organising. He is the conductor of this side.”

Van Dijk leads the way again

Seeing Van Dijk leap to head in Liverpool’s fourth was the perfect end to a brilliant night at Anfield.

The captain has been almost faultless all season long and deserves the chance to lift another trophy with the Reds.

Of course, he – and everyone else connected to the club – will hope that it is not the only pot Van Dijk will win this time, as it was last year.

The Netherlands international will not be getting carried away and will be keeping feet on the ground ahead of another cup game this weekend at Plymouth.

But Virgil will be feeling good about things this evening and rightly so.
