Cody Gakpo can do something not seen since Robbie Fowler as Liverpool’s Carabao Cup campaign continues

Liverpool are aiming to turn the Carabao Cup semi-final on its head as Tottenham come to Anfield on Thursday.

The Reds were unfortunate to lose the first-leg of the tie 1-0 back in January, with Lucas Bergvall controversially not sent off before bagging a late winner.

With the home crowd behind them and Arne Slot expected to field a strong team, Liverpool will fancy their chances of sealing a return to Wembley.

If they do, it’s likely that Cody Gakpo will have played a big part in it.

Just as he was last year, Gakpo has been superb in the Carabao Cup this season. Four goals in four appearances paints that picture.

The Dutchman hit the same amount on the way to glory at Wembley in 2024. But with two games potentially to play in this season’s edition, Gakpo has the great Robbie Fowler in his sights.

Cody Gakpo aiming to break 24-year record

Fowler is one of the best goal scorers in Liverpool history. In reality, Gakpo is not in the same class when it comes to finding the net.

However, for whatever reason, the 25-year-old has taken a real shine to the Carabao Cup.

Gakpo has eight goals in 10 competition appearances during his Liverpool career. With a goal statistically every 1.25 games, he has one of the best records around.

And according to liverpoolfc.com, the former PSV Eindhoven attacker is closing in on Fowler’s brilliant 2000/01 season.

It’s reported that Gakpo’s tally of four goals – the same as last term – has not been bettered by a Liverpool player in the competition since Fowler scored six 24 years ago.

Gakpo can obviously equal or better that if he turns up in a big way against Spurs on Thursday. And should Liverpool reach the final, perhaps Cody can knock Fowler off his perch.

Who has Gakpo scored against?

Although Gakpo has been lethal in the Carabao Cup this season, he actually has not scored in it since October.

The Netherlands international hit four goals in two games after doubles in the third and fourth rounds against West Ham and Brighton.

But after failing to score against Southampton and then in the first-leg of the Spurs tie, Gakpo is arguably due a goal.

In 23/24, the No.18 scored in every round on the way to the final, bagging against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Ham and Fulham.

Time for Liverpool’s Carabao specialist to put his name amongst the greats.
