Liverpool face a huge test this week in the League Cup semi-final with Tottenham coming to Anfield with a 1-0 advantage.

The 14th-place Premier League claimed a surprise win against the Reds last month in the first-leg of the semi-final series, with Tottenham heading to Merseyside this Thursday with an injury crisis and the awareness that their season could be over if they are eliminated against Liverpool.

One player who is expected to start for the Reds is Mohamed Salah, who Troy Deeney praised after the Liverpool winger delivered another match-winning performance on the weekend against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Indeed, Salah is in the form of his life heading into Thursday’s clash at Anfield, yet for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, the former Middlesbrough defender is ready to take on the Egyptian international and to give him a difficult game.

Djed Spence backs himself to take on Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah

Speaking to the Evening Standard, the £20m-rated Tottenham defender shared how he is confident in taking on Salah, with Spence saying he backs himself to face any winger in the world regardless of their form or quality.

With Salah breaking two records against Tottenham in the Premier League earlier this season when the two sides met in December, the 32-year-old attacker knows a thing or two already in how to break down Spurs’ defence, yet that hasn’t stopped Spence from talking a big game heading into this week’s tie.

Spence said when asked about facing Salah this week in the League Cup semi-final: “I back myself against any winger, Salah or whoever. I back myself against anyone. [Salah] is a great player, a top player.

“He’s in good form also. You’ve just got to nullify what he’s good at it, really. He’s good at a lot of things, I just gotta stay focused on it and hopefully come out on top.”

Could Mohamed Salah be rested for Liverpool vs Tottenham?

With six games to play this February, Liverpool’s squad will once again be stretched to it’s absolute limit, with Salah’s fitness key if Arne Slot’s side are to go all the way in the League Cup as well as progress in the FA Cup and maintain their Premier League title bid.

Yet with Liverpool’s next game after facing Tottenham being away to Championship relegation candidates Plymouth Argyle, there’s a real chance that Salah will start against Tottenham before being rested for the trip down to the West Country.

Liverpool face some big games this month, and for Slot, keeping Salah as fresh as possible for the big games will be key if the Reds are to make history this season by going for the quadruple.
