Liverpool are in the midst of another golden generation of managers having see Arne Slot succeed Jurgen Klopp in a flawless manner.

The Dutch manager was chosen to replace Klopp after the former Borussia Dortmund man’s departure from the Reds last summer, with Slot since taking Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings and claiming top spot in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

With Slot’s first months at Liverpool going better than Klopp’s, the Anfield side have landed a real gem of a manager in the former Feyenoord man, a far cry from the days of Roy Hodgson, who is widely viewed as one of the worst coaches to take over the Reds in the Premier League era.

And former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones has now shares why Hodgson wasn’t a success at Anfield despite having one of the best managerial careers out of most English managers in the last few decades across multiple countries.

Liverpool players ‘didn’t like’ Roy Hodgson’s style of management

Speaking to Optus Sport, the former Middlesbrough goalkeeper noted how Hodgson’s style at Liverpool having taken Fulham to a UEFA Europa League final simply didn’t work due to the quality the former manager had on his hands.

Jones said when asked about Hodgson’s tenure at Liverpool: “When I went there it was Roy Hodgson, I don’t want to say he was old school but he played a more simple style of football, very defensive, very structured.

“Talking to Mark Schwarzer who had him at Fulham, that’s what made Fulham good, because he’d make good players hard to play against, they got to a Europa League final because of it.

“But when he came to Liverpool, those players can already do that bit, these are the exceptionals, and the players didn’t like it, it was too much structure, let us play and we’ll figure it out. So that was difficult and it just didn’t click with that group of players.”

Dirk Kuyt one of Roy Hodgson’s few Liverpool backers

Hodgson will not go down in Liverpool’s history books as a successful manager, yet the former Crystal Palace coach did have some backers during his time on Merseyside, namely from Dutch icon Dirk Kuyt.

The former Netherlands international and Feyenoord legend said last year when asked about Hodgson’s tenure at Liverpool: “Unfortunately it didn’t work out but I had a great relationship with him [Hodgson].

“I actually felt sorry for him because he’s such a gentlemen, a hardworking man. He was already at that stage a little bit older but still a man with a lot of energy. I felt horrible after he left because I think he deserved more.”
