Liverpool have tended not to be active when the transfer deadline rolls around.
While other clubs race around trying desperately to find the best deals, the Reds are usually serene in their inactivity.
That was certainly the case this Monday, as Liverpool concluded the 2025 January window with no business to show for it.
Rewind 14 years to 2011, though, and Liverpool were the opposite of what we’ve come to expect from them in the years since.
Having sold Fernando Torres for a then record-breaking £50m, the Reds went out and got Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll for a combined £52.7m.
After becoming a modern-day legend at Anfield, Torres’ departure to Chelsea cut especially deep. But while many fans saw – and still see – the Spaniard’s exit as one of the biggest betrayals in Liverpool history, Torres has already told his side of the story.

Fernando Torres unwilling to wait at Liverpool
Torres had a funny time of things at Chelsea. Although he won plenty of trophies – including the Champions League – with the Blues, he was undoubtedly an expensive flop.
The World Cup winner could never quite recapture his Liverpool form and even became something of a figure of fun.
From the outside looking in, it was hard to understand why Torres had swapped Anfield adulation for a sterile experience at Stamford Bridge. But speaking to TalkSPORT in 2020, the Spanish hitman tried to explain himself.
“When I left Atletico, the team of my heart, it was with the target of winning trophies,” said Torres. “I was super happy at Liverpool.”

“But the club was about to be sold and it was a difficult moment; they were selling all their players and they started bringing in young players.
“It was another six or seven years to create a winning team and I didn’t have that time,” he added. “I needed to find my own way and that was going to Chelsea. I thought that was the club to offer me more chance of winning trophies.”
Torres get his wish
In fairness to Torres, he did get his wish. During his time with Chelsea he won a Champions League, Europa League and even an FA Cup against Liverpool. In the same time frame, the Reds won a solitary League Cup.
Nevertheless, it would be fascinating to know if Torres would do the same again if he had the chance.
| Apperances | Goals | Assists | Trophies | |
| Liverpool | 142 | 81 | 14 | None |
| Chelsea | 172 | 45 | 23 | Champions League, FA Cup, Europa League |
With their No.9 in the team, Liverpool would have had a much better chance at winning trophies in the early 2010’s.
El Nino was loved at Anfield and he traded all of that for a lifetime of being a villain on his old stamping ground.
Torres has been back to Liverpool since, even featuring in the Legend’s game in March 2024. But he could have been an all-time great, instead, he swapped it all for a few soulless medals.
