Giorgi Mamardashvili spotted telling Barcelona’s Ferran Torres why he didn’t move to Liverpool last summer

There could be plenty of change happening in key positions at Liverpool this summer.

With just four months or so of the season remaining, the Reds are still yet to sort out the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But while Liverpool are now in real danger of having to find new, key players at centre-back, right-back and right wing, they already know a switch could be happening in goal, too.

Alisson Becker’s form has tailed off somewhat since the number one returned from injury in December.

Having already seen the Georgian signed last summer, Alisson knows he’ll be under pressure for his starting spot from Giorgi Mamardashvili in 2025.

And as Mamardashvili gears up for his move to Anfield, the 24-year-old has been spotted giving an honest verdict on why he didn’t simply join Liverpool straight from Valencia last year.

Giorgi Mamardashvili explains Liverpool delay

Mamardashvili has found the going tough at Valencia this season. After 21 games, Los Che sit in 19th place in La Liga, facing the very real threat of relegation.

Although he’ll be doing everything to prevent it, whether his team go down or not will be slightly irrelevant to Mamardashvili, who will not be at Mestalla next season.

Nevertheless, results like Valencia’s 7-1 loss against Barcelona on Sunday will really sting the goalkeeper.

Despite the disappointing nature of the result, though, Mamardashvili was still seen having a friendly chat with one of the players who scored past him: former Man City man Ferran Torres.

Dazn caught the whole conversation on camera, and have handily explained what was said between Torres and Mamardashvili.

“Why didn’t you leave this year?” questions the Barca man, to which the goalie replies with just one word which says it all – “Alisson.”

Who will be Liverpool’s No.1 next season?

Although this can be taken as merely being Mamardashvili giving praise to Alisson and how good the 32-year-old still is, a different meaning can also be deciphered.

As has been reported, the current plan is for Mamardashvili to challenge Alisson for the starting spot at Liverpool next season.

With the young goalie unlikely to go out on-loan again, he’ll be reporting for duty at Anfield.

Given that Alisson’s presence is the reason he did not join up in 2024, perhaps Mamardashvili is suggesting that the Brazil international will be out of the way come 2025?

We’d suggest that actually Caoimhin Kelleher, not Alisson is the real reason Mamardashvili did not join straight after being signed, but that he sees it a different way could be a small reason for concern over Ali’s future.
