Liverpool will certainly be winning some new fans this season as Arne Slot’s team continue to storm the Premier League.
The Reds are still the most successful club in England, but younger supporters may be more inclined to support a Manchester City or a Chelsea these days.
Jurgen Klopp sent a reminder to the world during his time as Liverpool manager, however, that Anfield is still the place to be.
Fans and players of an older persuasion do not need an introduction to that fact.
Back when legendary former striker Alan Shearer was growing up in Newcastle during the 1970’s and 80’s, for example, Liverpool were the cream of the crop.
And although Shearer himself never turned out for Liverpool throughout his career, he has now revealed that he does in fact have a soft spot for the Reds.

Alan Shearer reveals Liverpool connection
Shearer has always been complimentary of Liverpool. You only need listen to his commentary for BBC’s coverage of the famous Barcelona comeback in 2019 to know that.
The 54-year-old was back on commentary duty on Tuesday as the Reds face Lille at Anfield. Asked about the experience by Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football on Friday, Shearer once again hailed the Liverpool crowd.
“All those Liverpool fans kind to you, Alan?” asked Lineker.
“Yeah, they don’t mind me at Anfield!” Shearer replied with a smile. “I quite like Liverpool at Anfield.”
“You don’t get stick when you go to Anfield, no?” a surprised Micah Richards chimed in. “I thought you’d get a bit of stick.”
“No, not really, it’s alright,” answered Shearer. “I used to live like 20 minutes from Anfield! I was there quite a bit when I was there in Southport, in Formby when I played for Blackburn, so I quite like Liverpool.”
Shearer has second reason to love Anfield
During his time with Blackburn, Shearer of course became a Premier League winner under Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.
But not only did the former striker win England’s top division, he also did it on the final day of the season – at Anfield.
With Liverpool fans pleased to see Blackburn pip Man United to the title, the home supporters stayed to cheer Rovers’ trophy lift.
Dalglish received plenty of congratulations from staff and fans alike, while Anfield saluted a title kept out of United hands.
For Shearer, being the only league title he won during his career, this will no doubt have stuck in the memory, too. As it turned out, it all happened just around the corner from his house!
