Liverpool can legitimately claim to have the very best squad in all of world football.

The Reds have so many household names within the team and have quality and depth running throughout.

It hasn’t always been this way, of course, but Liverpool have regularly managed to have top players in the squad no matter their overall situation.

One man who knows this very well is goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who was part of some very good Liverpool squads, and some rather less good ones.

Mignolet played across six seasons at Anfield, bridging the Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp eras and seeing all sorts of players come and go.

And during a career which has seen him take in spells in Belgium and England for four different clubs – as well as win 35 caps for the Belgium national team – Mignolet says one former Red stands out above all.

Simon Mignolet picks out Steven Gerrard

Mignolet’s career eventually petered out at Liverpool, although the 36-year-old perhaps deserves a little more respect than he gets at Anfield.

He was a key part of why Liverpool almost won the league under Rodgers in 2013/14 and went on to make 204 appearances for the Reds.

During that time he played with some great players, and when asked to named the one that sticks out while appearing on Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, Mignolet opted for legendary former captain Steven Gerrard.

“In all fairness, the moment in time [they played together] he was probably not at his best level anymore but of course what he achieved in his whole life, yeah, definitely,” said the Belgian.

Interestingly, Mignolet also had some warm words for Daniel Sturridge, who was lethal during the early parts of his Anfield career especially.

“He [Sturridge] was such a good finisher,” said the ‘keeper. “It wasn’t luck, in training you could see it all the time, if he was fit and the ball was in the right place for him. He was actually the best goal scorer or finisher I played with, it was unbelievable how easily he could find the net.”

Mignolet hails Gerrard leadership

As well as picking Gerrard out as his best ever teammate quality wise, Mignolet also waxed lyrical about the Scouser’s impact as a captain.

“You can’t speak more highly of a guy,” raved the Club Brugge shot-stopper. “Not only a player because it was also off the pitch that he was such a role model for the club and everybody who was there at the club.”

“To be a player in his dressing room you learn so much,” Mignolet added.

“Not only as a football player but also as a person. The way he was with every single individual on the pitch, off the pitch, it’s a credit to the person himself.”

A Liverpool legend through and through, we will never get tired of hearing praise for the icon that is Steven Gerrard. A good choice, Si!
