Liverpool’s January transfer window has been an interesting one, with the Reds teasing a potential move in the coming weeks.

Rumours have been flying about for some weeks, with Liverpool interested in El Hadji Malick Diouf as the Reds had a bid for Bologna’s Sam Beukema rejected, with Arne Slot’s side clearly keen on making an addition or two this month.

One player who has been absent from the Anfield rumour mill, though, is Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who during the summer was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool as the £70m-rated centre-back became a household name around Europe after his performances for England at Euro 2024.

And Palace have now been left surprised over Liverpool’s stance in signing Guehi this January.

Liverpool have no intention on moving for Guehi this January

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are not planning to move for Guehi this month despite Palace expecting an approach from the Reds for their captain, with Chelsea now the leading favourites to sign the defender.

With Guehi not signing a new Palace contract, there’s a good chance that the former Chelsea academy star could be on the move in 2025 in what could be one of the most expensive transfers in football history.

Yet for the Reds, Slot’s side seem to have taken a backseat in their interest in signing Guehi, with Liverpool instead eyeing Jorrel Hato, another player Chelsea are keen on taking in their bid to once again land every top wonderkid in world football.

Indeed, missing out on Guehi could be down to finances for Liverpool given how much Palace are demanding for their star player, and given how many extra bodies the Reds need this January, dropping interest in the England international could be for the best.

What do Liverpool need to do this January transfer window?

Central defence is arguably the most important area for the Reds to strengthen this January, with Slot confirming that Joe Gomez will be out for some time after picking up an injury last month against West Ham.

Away from defenders, though, the Anfield side could benefit from one or even two central midfield signings, with Liverpool making an approach for Joao Gomes after an impressive few months with Wolves.

With Liverpool also reigniting interest in Joshua Kimmich as the Germany international looks set to leave Bayern Munich this year, there is a chance that the Reds could make a superstar addition if the right player become available, with bodies needed if Slot is to challenge for the quadruple this season.
