The January transfer window is now open, giving Liverpool a fantastic squad to add to their chance to compete on all fronts.

The Reds lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, while they are also alive in both domestic cups.

The possibility of winning silverware in 2025 could tempt them into dipping into the market, although it is hard to find good value midway through the season.

Liverpool don’t really need to sign a player this month to sustain their push for trophies, but a market opportunity may have just opened up for them.

Liverpool should sign Douglas Luiz on a short-term deal

The Reds have a strong squad with the right blend of youth and experience, but one could argue that Arne Slot could do well with another defensive midfielder.

After Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Liverpool, Ryan Gravenberch has played as a number six and it’s safe to say Slot’s decision has worked wonders.

The Dutchman has played every Premier League and UEFA Champions League game this season, but what if he were to get injured or suspended?

The likes of Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton are in the squad, but judging by how Slot’s tenure has panned out so far, neither of them is particularly highly regarded by the manager.

So, where do Liverpool go from here? Enter, Douglas Luiz.

The Brazilian midfielder is an experienced campaigner and sealed a big-money move to Juventus from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

Luis hasn’t fared as well as he’d have liked at the Allianz Stadium and could reportedly be on his way to England as early as January.

Sky Sports state that the Bianconeri are looking to offload him this month, describing the Premier League as his likely destination.

Luiz has been described as an ‘outstanding’ player and is tailor-made to play as a number six as he’d bring a lot of experience under his belt. If the terms of the deal are feasible, Liverpool must have a move for him this month on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

Luiz’s Premier League record

Luiz is called up regularly by Brazil and made over 200 appearances for Aston Villa in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of their key players under Unai Emery.

While the defensive side of his game needs no introduction, he showed his goal-scoring antics for the Villains last season as they secured a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Luiz will be on the move this month and if Juventus agree to loan him to Liverpool for the rest of the season, we don’t see why it won’t be a good short-term option for the Reds.
