Liverpool host Manchester United in a huge Premier League tie at Anfield, with the Reds currently held against their oldest English rivals.

Despite the two contradicting forms between the two sides heading into this game, Liverpool have found it difficult to break down United, who going into today’s fixture had lost five of their last six Premier League games and sit 14th in the standings.

With Liverpool scoring 14 goals in their last three games, it’s been a frustrating afternoon so far for the Reds against United, who going into the break at 0-0 will be happy with their performance and how they’ve performed at Anfield.

Yet despite the scoreline, Jamie Carragher was impressed with one Liverpool player against United.

Alexis Mac Allister lauded after ‘fantastic’ first-half performance for Liverpool

Speaking on Sky Sports commentary of the match, the former Liverpool defender was full of praise for Alexis Mac Allister’s performance against United, with the Argentine international enjoying plenty of time and space on the ball.

With Mac Allister making the joint most appearances for Liverpool in 2024, the £35m signing from Brighton & Hove Albion last season has really come into his own this season under Arne Slot, with the midfielder looking as comfortable as he ever has with the Reds.

And Carragher was impressed with what he saw from Mac Allister, with the pundit saying about the midfielder after one good chance for the Argentine in the first-half: “Liverpool have improved in the last five minutes and a lot of that is down to that man.

“A couple of lovely passes, great run there to get on the end of that beautiful Mo Salah pass. He’s been fantastic, Mac Allister, so far in the game. Liverpool haven’t got going in the opening ten minutes but he’s the one who’s got them going.”

How good has Mac Allister been this season for Liverpool?

Mac Allister’s role at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp raised a lot of question marks given that the Argentine had made a name for himself at Brighton as an all-action attacking midfielder who was good for a goal and an assist in any game.

Yet Mac Allister has this season fully completed his transformation to a deep-lying midfielder for Liverpool, and alongside Ryan Gravenberch, the results have been amazing, with the Reds looking unstoppable when the pair are in the starting XI.

Indeed, Mac Allister has been influential to Liverpool’s form this season, and the midfielder is showing today against United just how good he has become since Slot’s appointment last summer.
