With the January window now open, Liverpool are free to make some decisions about their army of players out on-loan.
As usual, the Reds sent a number of young players away from the club to get experience further down the football pyramid.
Just like it always is, the process of sending Liverpool academy youngsters out on-loan hasn’t been a straightforward one.
For some, the time away will be one step further towards a place in the first-team Liverpool squad.
For others, loan moves will represent several steps in the other direction, as it becomes obvious that their respective careers lie away from Anfield.
One player who has clearly had no future at Liverpool for some time now is Rhys Williams. But after Williams’ impressive start to life at Morecambe, the Reds have made a decision on what to do with him for the rest of the campaign.

Rhys Williams extends stay at Morecambe
Williams will always be remembered at Liverpool for the way he stepped up during the 2020/21 season.
Together with Nat Phillips, the centre-back formed a defensive partnership which somehow secured Champions League football for the Reds.
Nevertheless, Williams has shown in the time since that he is unfortunately not up to the standard expected at Anfield.
A number of loan spells have failed to spark, with the 23-year-old recalled midway through each of the past three seasons.

This time has been different, though. Morecambe manager Derek Adams has hailed Williams as being ‘excellent‘ during his time with the Shrimps and according to journalist Dave Salmon, Adams has now had his request to extend the defender’s half-season loan confirmed.
“Morecambe manager Derek Adams has confirmed that defender Rhys Williams is staying at the Mazuma until the end of the season after his loan deal from Liverpool was extended,” Salmon reports on X.
Williams finally finds a home
After a really difficult few years for Williams, it is nice to see that he has finally found a home away from Liverpool.
The centre-back clearly has something about him. Although Liverpool were down to the bare bones in 20/21, Williams deserved his 19 appearances for the Reds. He did not look totally out of place.
| Appearances | Goals | Pass Accuracy | Tackles Won | Duels Won | Aerial Duels Won | |
| Rhys Williams in League Two 24/25 | 21 | 1 | 60.9% | 72.7% | 62.1% | 69.9% |
However, moves to Swansea, Blackpool, Aberdeen and Port Vale have yielded just 25 appearances over the past three-and-a-half years.
With Morecambe struggling at the bottom of League 2, it is a shame that Williams has had to drop so low to find a place he is comfortable.
But having struggled so much over recent years, it is simply pleasing to see the rangy defender getting on the team sheet and presumably enjoying his football again. With a contract at Anfield until 2026, it’ll be interesting to see whether Morecambe can become Williams’ permanent home in the summer.
