Liverpool still have chance to sign ‘magnificent’ player who staff think could be perfect fit

Liverpool are just days away from being able to sign new players in the January transfer window.

The Reds have been very inactive during the past couple of markets, but there’s a sense that things could be different in 2025.

As well as the fact that Liverpool could lose three key players during the summer, Arne Slot is surely going to want to start putting his own stamp on the Liverpool squad.

Part of that could be the reshaping of the Reds defence.

Clearly, a lot of what Liverpool decide to do with the back four will depend on whether Virgil van Dijk signs a new contract at Anfield.

However, even if the Liverpool captain does end up staying, it has now been claimed that the Reds could still push for an audacious move to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite.

Liverpool still in for Jarrad Branthwaite

Liverpool have been linked with Branthwaite ever since the 22-year-old was out on-loan at PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season.

Now back and excelling at Everton, it has felt as though the chance to poach one of their local rival’s best players has been and gone for Liverpool.

According to The Daily Mail, though, that is not actually the case.

Assessing the potential for Liverpool to do business in January, they claim that Branthwaite ‘remains a possibility’ for the Reds as they consider their options at centre-back.

Van Dijk’s age and Ibrahima Konate’s ‘ongoing contract discussions’ are two factors which are reportedly leading Liverpool to shortlisting Branthwaite.

However, while the groundwork for a transfer may be laid, it’s said that any move for Branthwaite would likely wait until the summer.

Can Liverpool really sign Branthwaite?

Since Branthwaite’s return from injury at the end of November, Everton have been solid defensively.

They may have lost against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, but otherwise the Toffees have been very good indeed over the past six weeks or so. Branthwaite has been a big part of that.

It’s clear why Liverpool would like him. At just 22, the former Carlisle defender is already an England international with a good amount of Premier League experience. Alan Shearer hailed Branthwaite as ‘magnificent‘ in the not too distant past.

There have also previously been claims that Liverpool staff think Branthwaite could be a perfect partner for Jarell Quansah in the future and with Everton in a slightly precarious position in the Premier League, maybe they’ll chance a bid.

Having said that, Everton’s ownership situation now looks to be secure and unless they go down, it’s hard to see why they would be minded to sell Branthwaite to Liverpool.
