Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon shuts door on Liverpool transfer after scoring against them

Liverpool did not appear to get the business done that they wanted over the summer window.

It was a frustrating summer for much of the fanbase, as the Reds pondered and analysed plenty, but ended up doing little.

A wide forward had seemed to be on the agenda for a while, and Liverpool did ultimately strengthen their attacking options with the arrival of Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa came in cheap and was seen as too good an opportunity to turn down by Richard Hughes and the Liverpool owners.

Although we haven’t seen much of the Italian at Anfield just yet, hope remains that Chiesa will end up as a smart addition to the Liverpool squad.

But the former Juventus man was not the only black and white clad player the Reds were after. Anthony Gordon was very much on their radar. Six months after Gordon’s proposed move to Liverpool broke down, the 24-year-old has now spoken out on his feelings.

The rumours that Gordon was set to join Liverpool last summer simply would not go away.

Ahead of Newcastle’s PSR deadline on June 30th, there were strong claims that Liverpool had agreed to sign Gordon for £75m, with Joe Gomez going the other way.

The Magpies seemingly got cold feet, though, and pulled the plug on a deal. Since then, Gordon has signed a new contract on Tyneside and backed that up by scoring against Liverpool last Wednesday.

And after he pulled out a ‘chattering hands’ celebration after the goal, the former Everton man has told Sky Sports of his frustration at the constant noise around his future.

“I always see about my future, where I’m going, where I want to go, without anyone actually asking me!” says a clearly annoyed Gordon. “Just leave me to play football. I just want to be happy and play football.

“I love it here, I’ve said plenty of times. I think with the speculation people assume it’s all correct when you’ve never heard from me once I’m unhappy at this place. I love everyone here, I love playing football here.

“All I’ve heard is ‘when is he leaving?'” adds the England man. “Who said I was ever going to leave?! D’you want I mean? I’m very, very happy here. I love this place, I love playing football here.”

Will Liverpool return for Gordon?

At one stage of the summer, it genuinely felt as though Gordon was set to join Liverpool.

After the move broke down, it then seemed like Liverpool were setting up a move for Gordon in 2025. Even after the boyhood Red signed his new contract at Newcastle, that does still seem possible.

Whatever Gordon is saying publicly, the suggestion was very much that he was up for a move to Anfield.

Reports even claim that Trent Alexander-Arnold sang ‘he’s coming home’ to Gordon during their time at Euro 2024 last summer. The forward may be happy, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t want the transfer to happen.

For now, it does feel like this one has been shelved. But it would still not be a huge surprise if Liverpool came back in all guns blazing next summer to test Gordon’s comments here. They could still come back to bite him in the eyes of Newcastle fans.
