Marco Reus admits he loved playing at Anfield and Liverpool are his favourite Premier League team

During the early years of Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Liverpool, Reds supporters were left wondering if he would ever raid Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp had enjoyed seven hugely successful years in Dortmund, working with an elite group of up and coming players.

With his new team on the rise, it felt possible – even probable – that the Liverpool manager would try and sign up some of his former charges.

Ultimately, only one ever come close to a move to Anfield. Mario Gotze held talks with Klopp over joining in 2016. And while Gotze regretted not joining Liverpool, it seems as though his former Germany teammate Marco Reus may feel a similar way.

Reus was forever linked with the Reds in the media, but it does not appear as though that was anything more than paper talk.

Nevertheless, having now left Dortmund and joined LA Galaxy, Reus has admitted that he has a soft spot for Liverpool after all.

Reus was a top player in his day. With pace, skill and an eye for goal, the 35-year-old looked every inch a Liverpool forward.

He certainly gave the Reds trouble on his two meetings with them during his career, bagging on his only trip to Anfield in 2016.

Eight years ago Reus was at his peak. And with Liverpool and Dortmund facing off in a famous Europa League clash, he was a key man for the German side, scoring in the away leg for Dortmund.

Almost a decade on, and the game is remembered as one of the best European nights in Liverpool history as Klopp’s team came back from an improbable deficit to advance into the semi-finals.

And the match obviously left an impression on Reus as well. Asked by AwayDays if he has a favourite team in the Premier League, the former Germany international mentioned that night in Liverpool.

“I like Liverpool to be honest,” he said. “I played there once and it was an amazing atmosphere. The atmosphere between the fans and the players was amazing.”

Liverpool fine with Sadio Mane

Liverpool and Reus would have been a match made in heaven. The winger was a perfect Klopp player and that would surely have translated to Anfield.

The only question mark over Reus, however, was his fitness record.

He did have tendency to pick up knocks and miss games and this would not have been welcomed at Liverpool.

Instead, the Reds had Sadio Mane, a player who was very rarely if ever injured.

Mane was an even better goal scorer than Reus and still boasted all of the speed and athleticism that underpinned the German’s game. What could have been with Marco, but we think Sadio dispelled any notion that Liverpool were worse off without him.
