Liverpool started in poor fashion during a difficult first-half against Newcastle on Wednesday.

The Reds knew it was set to be a tough evening for them up on Tyneside, with a night-time fixture at St James’ Park never an easy task.

So it proved early on, with Liverpool all at sea for large swathes of the opening 45 minutes.

Nothing worked for the Reds, with a makeshift right-hand side of the defence badly exposed against a high-pressing Newcastle team.

In truth, Liverpool were lucky to be just the one goal down at half-time. But Arne Slot has been adept at changing things for his team during second periods this season and so it proved again.

Out of nowhere, Curtis Jones fired home Mohamed Salah’s terrific outside of the boot pass and Liverpool were level. Watching live on YouTube, Jamie Carragher couldn’t hide his delight.

Jamie Carragher reacts to Curtis Jones goal

Liverpool were incredibly lucky to be just the one goal down after 45 minutes.

Slot made a few gambles with his starting XI with rotation very much on the mind of the Liverpool head coach.

But it’s safe to say that the changes did not work. Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah looked like very much what they are: a duo who have not spent much time playing together.

In front of them the Liverpool midfield was abysmal, giving away pass after pass.

Jones was front and centre of that, often taking far too long to use the ball. Nevertheless, he came up with a big moment early in the second-half, driving home the equaliser.

Watching on The Overlap’s live watch-along with Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Roy Keane, Carragher exploded in joy.

“Get in, Curtis Jones!” beamed the Liverpool legend. “1-1, get paid! Back in the game big fella!”

Curtis Jones on the scoresheet again

Although Jones was on the score sheet for Liverpool, his performance left a lot to be desired at St James’ Park.

The game was one for quick use of the ball and moving things forward with pace. That is not Jones’ game.

The 23-year-old has often been accused of holding onto things for too long and that was certainly the case on Wednesday.

Despite that, his goal was well taken and came at a pivotal moment for Liverpool.

So, while it was not a perfect display from Jones, it was the latest in his evolution into being a key man for Liverpool.
