Liverpool could have advantage in race to sign ‘generational talent’ for under £5m

Liverpool have been brilliant at picking up exciting youngsters from around Britain in recent years.

After Brexit rules forced them to look more locally for up and coming talents in 2020, the Reds have developed a real eye for spotting potential first-team players.

The likes of Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon joining were early indications that Liverpool were very much getting this right.

And in the years since, signings like Ben Doak, Trey Nyoni, Amara Nallo and – most recently – Rio Ngumoha have supplemented the Liverpool academy fantastically.

Of those six players mentioned, four have already debuted for the Liverpool first-team squad.

And according to journalist Graeme Bailey, that clear pathway from the youth team to the senior team may yet hand Liverpool the advantage in the race to bring in yet another top young player.

Liverpool looking at Lennon Miller move

While not all of these transfers will work out in the long-term, Liverpool have shown that they are more than willing to bet on young players.

As the capture of Ngumoha from Chelsea showed, prospects can see that there is a better chance of first-team involvement at Anfield than elsewhere.

And speaking exclusively to Rousing The Kop, Bailey suggests that this could serve the Reds well as they jostle to sign 18-year-old Motherwell wonderkid Lennon Miller.

“Miller’s an interesting character, he’s seen as a generational talent,” says the reporter. “He’s an 18-year-old who’s played more than 50 games and at the most he’s going to cost £5m.”

“Celtic and Rangers are battling over him but I think it’s one where the player’s going to have his pick really. It’s not going to be about money because he’ll get similar wages wherever he goes.

“Liverpool have been looking and we’ve seen the pathway for these young players,” he adds, crucially. “If you’re good enough you’ll get the chance and that’s the best way you can sell deals to these young players.”

Ben Doak can show Lennon Miller the way

Liverpool do of course have form for picking up one of Scotland’s brightest young talents. Doak was only 16 when he made the journey south from Celtic to Liverpool in 2022.

Since then Doak has gone one to become a full and established Scotland international, has made 10 appearances for Liverpool and is currently having a storming season in the Championship with Middlesborough.

Liverpool also signed Calvin Ramsay as an 18-year-old from Aberdeen after he showed promise North of the border.

Doak is expected to be with the Liverpool first-team once he returns, and his example can be a good one for Miller to follow as he weighs up where his next move lies.

With 57 appearances already for Motherwell, the central midfielder is clearly a talent. Four goals and two assists in 13 games this season suggests he’s ready for that move. Liverpool have shown that they can be the right step along the path.
