Liverpool fans told there’s something they may not know about new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool did not do much business at all during the summer transfer window of 2024.

The Reds had been expected to back Arne Slot and bring in some players who the new head coach saw as part of his vision.

In the end, there was only two bits of incoming business done in terms of the senior Liverpool squad.

Only one of those two, Federico Chiesa, joined the Reds immediately. And with Chiesa playing just 78 minutes of football over the first three months of the season, Liverpool fans will feel like they still do not know the Italian.

The other signing was Giorgi Mamardashvili. Having signed for the Reds and then immediately returned to Valencia on-loan, Mamardashvili has not even set foot in the Liverpool training ground yet.

As a result, the 24-year-old still feels to be a bit of a mystery. Thankfully, Georgia national team assistant manager David Webb has been on hand to fill supporters in on their new goalkeeper.

Giorgi Mamardashvili backed for Liverpool success

Since his signing at the end of August, Liverpool fans have been keeping tabs on Mamardashvili.

Despite the fact that Valencia sit 18th in La Liga after 12 matches, the goalkeeper has still been performing well.

And according to Webb, Mamardashvili is set to be a ‘perfect fit’ at Anfield, with his ‘very strong character’ cited for being one of the reasons why.

“Giorgi just feels like a perfect fit for Liverpool,” the coach told Give Me Sport.

“He’s an outstanding shot stopper. He commands his box. He’s very athletic, not only big but strong as well.

“And one of his best attributes, which I suppose Liverpool fans may not know, is his character. He’s got a very, very strong character. He’s an extremely hard worker and is determined to get right to the top.

“Giorgi is determined and tenacious,” adds Webb. “I think he will really embrace Liverpool, as both a club and a culture, and relish the challenge of replacing Alisson. I can see him becoming one of the top-five keepers in world football in the next few years. In fact, he’s already not far off.”

Liverpool open to all avenues with Mamardashvili

While Webb suggests that Mamardashvili will be tasked with the job of replacing Alisson at Liverpool, Rousing The Kop understands that this could even be a literal ‘replacing.’

It’s understood that Liverpool have not yet made a decision on what will happen in their goalkeeping department next season.

RTK understands that Caoimhin Kelleher has been told that he can leave the club, with Mamardashvili and Alisson left as the two options.

However, there is a feeling that the Reds could also choose to let Alisson go if a suitable offer arrives.

RTK understands that conversations are set to be held with both Mamardashvili and Alisson towards the end of this season, with Liverpool open to all avenues regarding both goalkeepers.
