Liverpool face Southampton this afternoon in the Premier League, where a win could take them eight points clear at the top of the standings.

Manchester City suffered one of their biggest shocks in recent league history on Saturday with Tottenham smashing the reigning Premier League title holders 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with Pep Guardiola’s side losing run extending to five games.

Although Arsenal and Chelsea both won convincingly, City slipping up yet again gives Liverpool a huge chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points, with the Reds facing the Manchester giants next week at Anfield.

And Guardiola has now shared if Liverpool can become title favourites if they win against City next Sunday.

Guardiola concedes that Liverpool will be Premier League favourites with City win

Speaking to the press after this weekend’s epic loss, the former Bayern Munich manager conceded that Liverpool beating City would see the Anfield side become the favourites for the Premier League title this season.

With Liverpool facing some big games in the upcoming weeks, claiming three points against City could be huge for Arne Slot in his mission to bring the Premier League back to Anfield, and Guardiola is seemingly convinced that the Merseyside giants could be on the march with a win next week.

Guardiola said when asked if Liverpool would be favourites if they beat City next week: “Yeah, it’s true. We’re not thinking about winning or losing [the title], we are not in the situation to think about what is going to happen at the end of the season.

“If in the end we don’t win it’s because we don’t deserve it. We won it in the past because we deserved it. What we have to do now is beat Feyenoord. That is the most important thing. First for the qualification for the Champions League, and step by step the players will be better.”

Liverpool know they can make a huge claim in the next seven days

With Southampton later today, Real Madrid coming up in midweek and City traveling to Anfield next Sunday, it’s safe to say that Liverpool have quite the seven days coming up in Europe and the Premier League.

Three wins from the next three could put the Anfield side on the perfect path to a historic season, with Slot’s side in the dream position to win the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

And a win on the south coast today against Southampton will be the ideal start to this mini run of fixtures, with Liverpool aware that they can make a huge claim in the next seven days if they win their next three games.
