Liverpool have put themselves in a glorious position to win the Premier League title after their stunning start to the new season under Arne Slot.

The Dutchman has won nine of his first 11 league games in charge of the club as they find themselves five points clear of champions Manchester City at the summit.

Slot had made the best start of any manager in Premier League history, which has led to talks of a historic title win in his first season at the club.

And Jamie Carragher has urged the Liverpool manager to launch a move for a player who rejected them in the summer to effectively seal the Premier League title.

Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window as he opted to remain at Real Sociedad despite having his head turned initially.

The Reds reacted by opting to use Ryan Gravenberch as a number six – a move that has been a masterstroke so far – but it could be argued that they still need another body in midfield.

Liverpool continue to keep tabs on Zubimendi ahead of the January transfer window and Carragher has explained why they need to make a move for him mid-season.

“If I was Liverpool I would be doing that,” said Carragher on Stick to Football.

“I was thinking about this – if you are Arne Slot and let’s say an average Premier League manager is at a top club for two or three years trying to win the league. Arteta has been there for four or five years. You are trying to build something.

“He might never be in this position again in terms of being nine points clear of Arsenal and five clear of City.”

Liverpool told to take a mid-season punt

Over the years, Liverpool have often taken a measured approach in the transfer market.

However, Carragher believes they need to capitalise on their fantastic position in the Premier League table and get a deal for Zubimendi over the line to win the title.

He continued: “There’s a long way to go, I get that, but we know Liverpool don’t do silly things in the transfer market but if there is something there right now. Do it.

“Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want – go and do it – you might never be in this position.

“You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count.”

Liverpool were willing to trigger the Spaniard’s £51m release clause in August but were unable to convince the player.

However, they may be tempted to try again in January, although it remains to be seen if Zubimendi has had a change of heart in such a short span of time.
