Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could be in for a special night at Anfield when his side host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Kelleher impressed against Brighton on Saturday as Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win at Anfield.

But Kelleher could leave Liverpool at the end of the season given his predicament under Arne Slot, where he is still the number two goalkeeper.

The Republic of Ireland international has filled in expertly for Alisson during his injury absence, but the Brazilian is likely to return as number one when fully fit.

Giorgi Mamardashvili meanwhile will arrive at the club next summer, likely pushing Kelleher further down the pecking order.

For the time being, however, the current first-choice is crucial for Slot, with Kelleher set for his first Champions League appearance at Anfield in front of a crowd.

It does, of course, represent a return to Merseyside for former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the current Bayer Leverkusen manager.

Kelleher was asked in his pre-match press conference of his memories of Alonso in red, with the goalkeeper saying: “Yeah, of course. Obviously I remember watching him.

“He was obviously a class player when he was here and then went to Real Madrid as well. I have good memories of him. His passing range was outrageous. Obviously good memories.”

Will Xabi Alonso come back to haunt Liverpool at Anfield?

Alonso has done a phenomenal job in the Bayer Leverkusen dugout, with the German club winning the Bundesliga title under his guidance last season.

That brought an end to Bayern Munich’s dominance, with Leverkusen also reaching the Europa League final under the Spaniard.

But they currently occupy fourth spot in the Bundesliga table this time around, while they are sixth in the Champions League table with seven points.

Sitting two ahead and in joint-first place are Liverpool, who are flying high under Slot and his coaching staff.

Alonso will be welcomed back with open arms by the Anfield crowd, but that warm welcome should end abruptly when the first whistle goes.
