Man United manager Ruben Amorim has his own theory over why Liverpool didn’t hire him last summer

Liverpool had a sliding doors moment on Friday as they saw Ruben Amorim appointed as Manchester United manager.

Amorim will officially join United on November the 11th as he takes over from Erik ten Hag.

The move comes just months after reports that Liverpool were speaking to Amorim about succeeding Jurgen Klopp over the summer.

Ultimately, the Reds chose to go in a different direction, hiring Arne Slot who has since proven that to be a very good decision. Nevertheless, it will be fascinating to see how Amorim gets on at Old Trafford.

The reasons behind Liverpool deciding not to go for the 39-year-old have been bandied about ever since it became clear that he would not be installed at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool did not see Amorim’s tactical approach as a natural fit, but it seems as though the manager himself has a different theory.

Ruben Amorim has Liverpool rejection theory

Amorim is undoubtedly an exciting appointment for United. The former Portugal international has had plenty of success in his short managerial career up to this point.

However, it is also true that Chelsea and Liverpool both needed managers last summer and chose to overlook Amorim.

Amorim flew to London to meet with West Ham as well, but that didn’t come to fruition either.

But while the logical thinking is that the Reds simply preferred Slot to become the new Liverpool head coach, The Independent claim that Amorim – or the ‘people close to him’ anyway – have a different view.

It’s reported that the Portuguese’s entourage felt a move broke down based on Liverpool not wanting to pay his release clause to Sporting.

However, it is noted that the Reds paid around £10m to get Slot and his staff out of Feyenoord, which is described as being a ‘similar’ amount they would have needed for Amorim.

As a result, there is reportedly an ‘insistence’ from Liverpool that Slot simply fitted their specific criteria better.

Liverpool more than happy with Arne Slot

Had Slot come in and failed to get going with Liverpool, this story may have had a different feel to it.

But as it is, the Dutch coach could hardly have done a better job with the Reds so far.

Consequently, nobody will be too bothered – or should be too bothered – about missing out on Amorim to United.

Of course, that could change in the future if the former Benfica midfielder has success with Liverpool’s great rivals.

For now, though, whatever the reason the Reds didn’t want Amorim, we’re more than happy with Slot.
