Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk played a supporting role as he watched his side beat Brighton 3-2 in the League Cup.

Van Dijk comforted Jarell Quansah at the full-time whistle at the Amex Stadium, with the youngster having endured a difficult ending to the game.

But Liverpool still left Brighton with the victory and a spot in the League Cup quarter-finals, where they will take on Southampton.

Arne Slot was pleased with the performance, with the Reds boss making several changes to his XI in order to keep players fresh.

And that involved resting captain fantastic Van Dijk, with Quansah and Joe Gomez getting the nod at centre-back.

They will be disappointed to have conceded twice, but Luis Diaz and a brace from Cody Gakpo helped the visitors come out on top.

And after a huge challenge on the south coast, Van Dijk has taken to social media to celebrate the victory with the fans.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk set to return vs Brighton

Liverpool now have a quick turnaround, with Brighton once again their opponents this weekend, this time in the Premier League at Anfield.

The Seagulls will be out for revenge, but Slot will be quietly confident as he welcomes back the likes of Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Salah appeared from the bench in the League Cup win, but the winger should be full of energy for the next outing.
