Jamie Carragher names the one Liverpool player who is currently the best in the world in his position

Liverpool maintained their fantastic start to life under Arne Slot as they reached the League Cup quarter-finals.

Vitezslav Jaros stood out for Liverpool in their hard-fought win at Brighton, where the Reds won 3-2 in the last 16.

Liverpool manager Slot was afforded the luxury of resting several key players for the trip to the south coast, and it should pay off when Brighton visit Anfield on Saturday.

After their five-goal thriller, the two clubs face each other once more in Premier League action this weekend.

It was another important team display from the Reds, although Cody Gakpo really impressed with his fantastic brace.

Jamie Carragher makes Virgil van Dijk claim at Liverpool

His fellow attacker Luis Diaz also got on the scoresheet as players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk were given well-earned rests.

The right-back wasn’t in the squad as the captain watched on from the bench, with the latter having been praised by Anfield icon Jamie Carragher before the match.

Challenged with naming the best current defender in world football for The Overlap, Carragher opted for Van Dijk.

The ex-Liverpool centre-back followed that claim by naming his former teammate Steven Gerrard as the best-ever midfielder.

Van Dijk wasn’t at his best under Jurgen Klopp last season, but that was the case for several senior Liverpool players.

And in a similar turn of events this time around, he has really excelled under Slot, much like teammates Diaz, Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch.

The Anfield skipper leads the way for Premier League clean sheets this season, with the boss clearly working heavily on this area in training.

Van Dijk is also a threat in the final third, with the towering defender already on two goals in all competitions under Slot.

He really is back at the top of his game, and has unquestionably helped improve Konate, with the duo forming a formidable partnership at the back.
