Liverpool survived a late Brighton & Hove Albion scare to secure a 3-2 League Cup win against the Seagulls.

Cody Gakpo was the key man for Liverpool as the Dutch international scored two fantastic goals for the Reds to set-up a quarter-final encounter with Southampton, with the Anfield side looking good to reclaim their League Cup title.

Although Virgil van Dijk had to comfort Jarell Quansah after the young Liverpool defender made a mistake, it was an overall good day at the office for the Reds, who secured a good win with a rotated side against a strong Premier League opponent.

And Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler noted one moment from a Liverpool player that left him impressed.

Cody Gakpo praised after ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool goal vs Brighton

Speaking to the press, the former St. Pauli manager hailed Gakpo for his ‘unbelievable’ opening goal for Liverpool against Brighton, with Hurzeler also noting that he was disappointed in the manner his side lost the game at the Amex Stadium.

With Brighton scoring two late goals, the Seagulls waited too long to attack Liverpool where it hurt last night, with the Reds able to see out the win and to book passage to the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

And Hurzeler, the game was a frustrating one, yet nothing could have been to stop Gakpo’s incredible striker just after the restart to put Liverpool on the right path to a 3-2 win against Brighton on the south coast.

Hurzeler said: “It is disappointing to be knocked out of the cup but we were not ruthless enough. I think Liverpool scored in the right moments. They scored out of nowhere with an unbelievable shot and they had the timing on their side, we were not able to reply in the right moments.”

And as per Gakpo’s overall stats for the evening, the former PSV Eindhoven star was on top of his game for Liverpool, with the winger causing Brighton problems both offensively and creatively with his passing.

With Slot saying Gakpo is now a regular starter for Liverpool, this performance could be the beginning of the forward’s best spell for the Reds, with the winger showing plenty of promise since joining two years ago.
