Liverpool came away with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal in one of the biggest Premier League games of the season so far.

Mohamed Salah scored a sensational equaliser ten minutes from time as Liverpool ensured the points were shared at the Emirates Stadium, with the Reds dropping down to second place in the Premier League after Manchester City’s win yesterday.

With Gary Neville noting one mistake Virgil van Dijk made for Liverpool, the Anfield captain wasn’t at his best for the Reds in what was a stressful game for the Merseyside giants, who were second-best for most of the fixture.

And Van Dijk has now shared what he feels about signing a new contract with Liverpool.

Van Dijk coy over new Liverpool contract after Arsenal draw

Speaking to Sky Sports after the 2-2 draw, Van Dijk didn’t reveal too many details on if he will sign a new contract with Liverpool, though the Dutch international shared how he is ‘very calm’ about his situation despite his deal expiring at the end of this season.

Van Dijk said: “I’m very calm. Let’s see what happens towards the end of the season. I’m enjoying my football, physically and mentally. Keep enjoying the game because it’s a beautiful game that we play and I play.”

With Van Dijk attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, there’s a growing chance that the defender could swap Liverpool for the Middle East if the Reds are too slow to tie the Dutch international down to a new contract.

Yet with Van Dijk publically stating that he is comfortable about his current situation, there could be some positive new sooner rather than later from Liverpool regarding the future of the Anfield captain.

Liverpool have to sort out Van Dijk’s contract as soon as possible

Van Dijk remains one of the best defenders in the world, with Liverpool’s entire defensive structure from the back revolving around the former Southampton centre-back when he’s fit and available.

And with Van Dijk’s contract coming to an end at the end of this season, Liverpool need to be hard at work doing all they can to ensure that the 33-year-old defender signs a new deal with the Anfield side.

Van Dijk’s role at Liverpool is simply irreplaceable, and committing the defender to a new contract for a few more years will be huge for the Reds in their mission to succeed under Arne Slot.
