Scotland were once again on the losing side in the UEFA Nations League with Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Ben Doak in the starting XI vs Croatia.

The Anfield duo both started in Zagreb with Scotland falling to a 2-1 defeat, though manager Steve Clarke was impressed with Doak’s performance in what was the Liverpool winger’s first-ever start for his national team.

With Robertson taking the armband as always, the Liverpool defender will be disappointed with how the Tartan Army failed to win their first point of this Nations League campaign, with Scotland losing their first three games since winning promotion to League A.

Yet the Scottish national media were impressed with what they saw from Robertson in Croatia.

Robertson a ‘constant’ threat for Scotland vs Croatia

With VAR ruling out a last-second Che Adams goal that would have seen the points split for Scotland, it was hardly the worst night at the office for Clarke’s side where bad luck once again hovered over the home nation.

And one of the best-performing players on the night was Robertson, with Edinburgh News hailing the Liverpool defender for being ‘a strong threat’ for Scotland and causing a lot of problems down the wing despite a lack of bodies in the final third.

The Glasgow Times were also impressed with what they saw from Robertson, with the former Hull City man lauded for being ‘a constant menace’ for Scotland as the Liverpool fullback made the most of Croatia’s aging squad.

Indeed, Scotland showed yet again that they can compete with the best in Europe if a little bit of luck goes their way, and Robertson’s performance will be an encouraging one for Liverpool fans with the end of the international break in sight.

Robertson could come back from the international break back at his best

It’s been a strange season for Robertson at Liverpool this term, with the defender struggling with injuries and delivering some performances that suggest that the fullback is in need of a rest having not had the summer off.

Yet this international break could prove to be the turning point for Robertson to return to Anfield next week back to his best ahead of what could be a massive period for Liverpool and their fortunes in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

The Scotland international is one of the best left-backs in the world, and against Croatia, Robertson showed exactly that for the Tartan Army, with the defender all set to return to Liverpool back to his best.
